Suggestions for fiberglass repair along the keel

Grind it out to fair it to the surrounding surfaces, tape it off, and apply some white gelcoat thickened with cabosil. Wet sand and buff to taste. Unless you're a stickler, no need to try to color match since it's on the bottom of the hull and nobody is likely to ever see it.

    Polyester resin cracked while curing

Glass over it and you'll be fine. Too hot of a mixture or too big of a glob of PB to cure at once will cause that.

    Rotten 1982 Beachcraft

Looks good. Biscuit cutter's a handy tool that I've never had the pleasure of owning. I did scarf joints to stretch my 8 ft plywood to 12 ft to make stringers.

Noise from engine compartment when steering left or right

If the noise is constant while holding a turn and you don't have power steering, it's probably gimbal or u-joints. Buy an alignment tool, pull the drive, and inspect the gimbal bearing alignment and inspect the u-joints. Does the noise change based on how you have the drive trimmed? Even...

2002 Mastercraft 5.7 harmonic balancer moving in and out

I'd be buying a Scat 383 rotating assembly and taking the block to a competent machine shop, letting them know the situation so they can inspect for any damage.

1987 Power Play XLT-185 - floors, stringers, and upholstery

Another great weekend at my brother's lake house is in the books. I spent nearly the entire month of July in SoCal for work so coming back to The South's humidity, rain, and heat was a rude awakening, but it sure was nice to be back behind the wheel of the Power Play. The boat ran out great...

    Building a '93 Caravelle 1750 Classic Bowrider

I was thinking about that the other day while in the garage. I foamed my hull in the winter and had to burn kerosene and use my heat pump to get my garage up to 89F so I could pour foam. Now it easily gets up over that on it's own. 😂

    It's Time!

I pulled the cap on my 19 ft boat amd it wasnt too bad. Build a stand, separate the cap from the hull and slide in four long (10 ft) 2x4's, then have a cookout and invite 7 friends over to eat, drink a few beers, and spend 15 minutes pulling the cap and walking it back to the stand you built...

    Poor man’s boat - 1988 sea Ray weekender 230

The gimbal ring is broken in half. Whether it was damaged pulling it out of the water or because it hit something like a submerged log, breaking a gimbal ring could mean the transom was heavily stressed. Do some careful looking inside for cracks, and I agree - test drill near the drain hole at...

How smooth should hull be when tabbing in stringers

It looks about how mine did...I think you're good. In line with what Scott's saying, if while grinding you see a spot that looks light start to appear, chase it for a little bit, as it's probably a bubble / delamination from the original layup. On my boat, I could tell if I got all the way...

    Smoker Craft 192 Floor Restoration

    1990 Reniell 170M

Why are you going to cover the gelcoat stripe? I would just wet sand and buff it if it's oxidized. You can make it look brand new, and a lot better than putting vinyl over it.

    Smoker Craft 192 Floor Restoration

The deck is probably stapled down directly to the stringers. Unless this exterior textured vinyl product is made for a boat, you may want to do something more marine rated like non-skid gelcoat on top of the fiberglass you lay over your new deck. It's not as hard as it sounds. Brace yourself...

1977 Crestliner Muskie 7**, Outboat Restore Project

You should fill the gaps under your stringers. PB is harder than pine, hands down. It's not a hard vs soft thing. The reason you hear people say to leave a gap is so that you can have room to fill it with a bedding material (PB) and get a consistent contact patch between the stringer and...

    1708 for stringers

I bought a 50" roll too and cut my own strips. I used a pair of Wiss 10" shears ($30) and they made it through my whole project, but they could stand to be sharpened after cutting that much glass.

Engine mount support on a '85 Peterborough Monza Runabout-Need Help!

Oof, I did plane (didn't finish it though), hot rod, boat, and I'll never have a chopper!

A small multi meter and a flashlight are good additions to the tools mentioned above. Replace batteries in both at the beginning of every season.

I used sapele mahogany. It wasn't as expensive as I thought it would be.

1987 Power Play XLT-185 - floors, stringers, and upholstery

I swapped my 21P cleaver to a 19P Laser II yesterday and so far I like it. The boat get up to about 4600 RPM now and gets out of the hole better. I'll just keep the 21P cleaver on the shelf for when I get the Vortec 383 done. 😎 Happy 4th weekend folks!

    1968 Glastron Transom question

In my boat there was a bulkhead that was not glassed in - just tabbed in with glass but the middle was just gelcoat over wood. Of course it was super rotten. You may have no glass in the area of the transom you're looking at. You could lay some glass over it to add strength, but if you have any...
