    1979 Glastron Carlson CV-23 restoration

For your cherry picker dilemma - if you haven't already, take the wheels off the trailer and set the axle on 4x4 or 4x6 wood blocks - should gain you a good bit of clearance. In my case, that still wasn't enough, so I hoisted the engine, blocked it up in the bilge, then re-rigged my cherry...

    Wood rot HELP

To me it looks like the OEM did a very resin-rich layup and the resin pooled down in the keel before it cured. Resin with no glass is brittle and will crack apart over time. I think that's what you're seeing - likely not a big concern. If it bothers you, or if you need/want to glass over that...

    No core floor

True...sorry for the derail. I have no input on a fiberglass only floor. I think you're on the correct path regarding putting stiffening ribs or additional supports to minimize the free span, if you go that route. Good luck.

1980 Beachcraft I/O Pretty but Rotten

Nice looking boat - the 80's were a great time for boat design, IMO. Anything from that vintage is going to be suspect for rot, though, unless it has been recently restored with lots of documentation. Also, unless you've restored a boat before or are already comfortable working with...

    No core floor

Are you only concerned about the thickness of the portion of the floor that runs under the open bow floor? If so, use a router, belt sander, hand planer, or something similar to thin out a piece of 1/2" plywood in the 6-8" where it will tuck under the open bow floor. Use a smear of PB to make...

    1979 Glastron Carlson CV-23 restoration

Oof, time to bite the bullet and do a full gut of the wood structure instead of trying to apply band-aids.

1977 Crestliner Muskie 7**, Outboat Restore Project

I didn't want to put holes in my beautiful sealed deck either, so what I did was make some "pads" out of solid mahogany and PB'd those in place, tabbed them in with 1708, then covered in 1 layer of 1.5 oz CSM, and finally gelcoat. Mahogany is a rot-resistant wood and can take a screw very well...

    1990 Bayliner 2651 resto

Agree - cut the fiberglass out of the keyhole. Install the new transom wood, glass it in place, then you can glass the inside of the keyhole.

There is definitely a learning curve to using contact cement, but once you understand it, it's great stuff.

    1981 Citation Marquis restoration...

The "pin" in a blind aluminum rivet is the steel core used to mushroom out the back side of the rivet when you pull it to set it. The reason the drill bit walks off is because it's a steel pin inside of a soft aluminum rivet. Usually I take a small drift punch and a hammer and knock the pins...

Advice on transom , stringers and floor rebuild

I went with 3/4" plywood for my sun-pad too.

    Transom Repair 1984 Bomber Scout

If you love this boat enough to put a few (several?) thousand dollars and a few hundred hours into the repair of, pull the rub rail, pop the cap, take dimensions, demo, and rebuild. Otherwise, it may be a better option to spend your efforts and money on a boat in better shape.

I wouldn't sweat it, since it'll be covered by the rub rail. Brace yourself for further disappointment with OEM boat manufacturing practices as you continue to dig in.

    Trim up not working.

Trailer switch raises the drive with no limit on where it will stop until its all the way up. Trim up button raises the drive but stops when the trim limit switch is tripped, so you don't trim up too far with the engine running. Sounds like your trim limit switch may be out of adjustment or the...

    1981 Citation Marquis restoration...

When I de-capped mine, it seemed like the hull bowed outward coming from near where the floor attaches (at the chines). I did not build a cradle or do internal bracing - just crossed my fingers and restored the hull on my bunk trailer. I did take width measurements every foot immediately after...

That's crappy. What brand / supplier did that float come from so we know to stay away?

Thanks! Yes it was a labor of love, and it was all worth it in the end. Your project is looking great, keep up the good work.

    Keel damaged

Grind/sand and fill with your gelcoat paste, or make your own next time by adding some cabosil to regular gelcoat. Wet sand and buff to fair it in to the surrounding areas.
