Yep, narrow layer first, then wider layer second for tabbing.

    Engine Bed Fabrication

On my restoration, I pulled the old engine mounts and cut them open to see what they were. Turns out they were a 2" piece of mahogany (very rot resistant) sandwiched between 3/4" plywood. The lag bolts go into the mahogany, so any moisture that gets in through the bolt holes is only impacting...

    Engine removal thoughts

I had a buddy with a track hoe help me pull my engine. He couldn't bring it to me, so I towed my boat to his place. He picked the engine and set it on a tire. I towed the boat home, dropped it off, picked up a utility trailer, and went back for the engine. When I got home with the engine I...

1962 Chris Craft Holiday 20’ bucket list resto

If you zoom in close enough, you can see patches of skin stuck to that black vinyl from unsuspecting passengers. kidding of course. But man...what kind of sadist does black vinyl in a boat interior? Looking forward to seeing what you come up with for a lighter color of gator skin vinyl.

Poly or epoxy, not sure what to go with?

If you can afford it, buying a Dust Deputy was one of the best tool investments I made when doing my restoration. I also bought a 13 ft hose for my vacuum and a remote control outlet so that the vacuum and dust deputy could be on the ground outside the boat, and you can still turn the vacuum on...

    1990 Bayliner 2651 resto

If you've got a router you could build something like the fixture I used to make scarf joints for my stringers. It let's you router a very shallow angle into a piece of plywood. Just Google or YouTube "scarf joint fixture".

Poly or epoxy, not sure what to go with?

I found that the hype about poly being difficult and not forgiving to be false. Both poly and epoxy stink - yes, poly has a more potent smell, though. Neither will want to cure in cold temperatures. Both are messy. Both are plenty strong for your boat. Here are some benefits of using poly...

1987 Power Play XLT-185 - floors, stringers, and upholstery

Today marks the 1 year anniversary of my project splashing. Just want to encourage those out there who are in the middle of a restoration or are thinking about taking one on that there is light at the end of the tunnel!

    Reattach cap to hull

I just used some clear silicone caulk I got from Home Depot. My cap was originally put together with it, so that's what I went back with.

    88 Capri Restoration (Splashed 08/2022)

I totally understand that - and 3,000 hours...whew! My glass boat restoration is my first foray into boats with engines, so I don't have any aluminum boat recommendations - I'm about as new as they come. Here's my build thread...

    88 Capri Restoration (Splashed 08/2022)

Another data point, since I finished mine a year ago: I'm 40 and not sure I'd want to do another one...definitely could, but it was a huge time suck. I'd estimate I have somewhere between 300-500 hours in my complete gut and restore. Counting the hours invested, it would not be worth it to...

    Old I/Os = Money Pits?

If you delve into I/O's, I would recommend staying with a boat that has a Mercruiser Alpha or Bravo drive. Lots of market support for those.

    Polishing or paint

Nah, I don't think that was my problem. It shines great with the wet sand/buff schedule I did, but I think I should have spent longer time at some of the intermediate wet grits to get the bigger sanding swirls out.

    Polishing or paint

There is no real magic, it's just a helluva lot of work to do the whole boat. I had to go all the way down to 180 grit in some places then work all the way up to 800, then 1000 grit AquaBuff, and finally AquaBuff 2000. I probably took a year off my shoulders' lives and I'd guess I have about 60...

    Transom patch

Ah yes, welcome to the fold. It's going to be disheartening at first, then dusty and itchy, then smelly and sticky, but if you persevere there are beautiful sunny days on the water ahead! You'll have a spring in your step at the end of the project from pride in your work AND from how light...

    Fuel Line handling?

Wow, that kinked fill hose is terrible!

    Fuel Line handling?

My boat was originally constructed with the rubber fuel hose just foamed in place - horrible if you ever need to replace it in the future. On my resto I used grey PVC conduit with large sweeping bends to make a pipe through which I could route my fuel hose and ground wire.
