Free boat with history of leak... worth it? Will a survey catch issues?

I go boating with my family. Safety is MORE than job 1. Also, the thought of having to spend megabucks to fix up old crap is a nogo. If someone offered me a 32 year old boat I would pass. If someone offered me a FREE boat I would pass. If someone offered me a boat that had a leak, I would...

    Dauntless 18 motor height opinions?

Eons ago, OB motors clamped on....only one height. Then I bought a new motor and it had a series of vertical holes. The dealer installed it where he thought it should be. After reading about performance (not a lot of literature back in the 1970's) I raised it up one notch. Wholly mackerel...

    Outboard Stands

There are designs online for OB motor stands. I have personally built a dozen or more stands, but for motors between 3 HP and 35 HP. I guess you could go bigger, and a google search would probably provide specs. But my questions would be: Why would you need a stand? Why would you take it...

Golden Jubilee Evi Sportwin 10 - Should I convert?

I googled it yesterday and found one for 50 bucks. I know Laing's Outboards has a whole stack of used tanks, but I don't know what he charges. The tank rebuild kit is 20 bucks. Hose is about 4 bucks a foot. Yes, it's a '59 Fastwin. I got it about 15 years ago, and it came with both the...

Golden Jubilee Evi Sportwin 10 - Should I convert?

I was going to say that ^^^^ was the correct answer. But since I see it is already too late I'll say it anyway. Pressurized thanks are readily available. EBay, OB meets, etc. I have 4 of them and 2 I got out of the garbage. For 20 bucks you can buy a rebuild kit with gaskets and seals and...

What kind of damage from an I/O in salt water for 2-3 years?

If it were free the cost of a full restoration would be double what the boat was worth. Regarding the original question re. 2 years in salt water, a friend of mine had a similar situation, however his boat was 5 years old (bought new) and had lived in fresh water its whole life. It was well...

What kind of damage from an I/O in salt water for 2-3 years?

'91 Bayliner is the operative phrase. If it was fresh water it would be a bad choice.

Topped off battery with Distilled water....Why not with battery acid???? Opinions???

As I stated above, my RV has a solar panel that is a "maintainer", and it is on and charging whenever the sun is out. The purpose and function would be the same if the RV were a boat. It DOES need water added twice a year. Maybe only a few ounces, so it's not "boiling off water", per se'...

    Critters in My Boat

After reading some of the comments, maybe cats and dogs are more of a problem than mice.

Need to paint 12" wide Aluminum Flashing green as a lawn border.

Rustoleum Self Etching Primer, and then topcoat with Rustoleum in the color and sheen you desire. Painting aluminum requires special primer.

    Boats from work.

My fishing boat was a Starcraft Utility. When I saw a Whaler Montauk at a boat show I just had to have one. After a year with that 4-stroke outboard, we sold our I/O family boat and upgraded to an outboard runabout.

    Keel guard length

I've been beaching on sand bars for over 50 years. The gelcoat where it hits the beach is all scratched up and "sanded", but the damage is only cosmetic, and not readily visible. I know that if I ever hit a rock I would not be so lucky to have it hit the keel. And if it did it would probably...

    Keel guard length

Your keel looks pretty good. Why do you want a keel guard?

    Critters in My Boat

Peppermint, moth balls, etc, etc. are all snake oil. My buddy's shed smells so bad of moth balls that you can't go inside without a mask, yet the colonies of mice are unbelievable. I like the dryer sheet idea.....LOL. My buddy's trailer were laced with them. The mice love them....they chew...

    Cruise lines

Or son convinced us to take a cruise after he had a wonderful experience. We just completed our 16th cruise and have 17 and 18 booked. Petri dish....pfffft. Wash your hands once in awhile, man. We tried a ocean view once.....pffft. Gotta have a balcony. They all have the king bed option...

    Critters in My Boat

People with RVs have the same problem. It all comes down to the fact that if they have access, they WILL come in. Gotta fix all holes!!!! OK, OK, not that easy. Paid storage, shrinkwrap, lots of duct tape? Whatever it costs will probably be less cost than what it takes to fix the damage to...

Testing Gas Flow on 82' Wellcraft Sterndrive

I had an I/O with a points distributor and it was an annual issue. Clean them, dress them, etc. Not hard, but I want to go fishing not tinkering. Finally, I replaced it with the Pertronics unit. WHOOLY MACKERAL. Not only no more tinkering, but the engine simply ran better and smoother...

    Waterlogged foam?

Good catch. You need to look closely at the pics. With no foam under the deck (a legal requirement) it looks like the hull was refurbed before, and not put back to specs. If the deck needs to be replaced, 98% sure that the transom needs it too. Looking less and less like "beautiful" all the...

    Waterlogged foam?

Good question. I guess it needs more clarification. What does water line to the top of the transom mean? (that sounds like the boat is almost sunk) Next, what about cob webs? There should be foam there. If there is none, then that old boat has been rebuilt before. What did the rebuilder...

    Waterlogged foam?

Sounds like this could be a futile effort. 47 year old boats have little monetary value. Rotten boats have no value. Even if you do the work yourself, your end cost will be double the value of the boat. The pics don't make me warm and fuzzy about gorgeous. But then again I am a boater with...
