1996 Century Boats 1800 Center Console Refit and Modernization

I found that if I used the wheel as shown below, it left hardly any residue. If you use it where the wheel is spinning the other direction, it left lots of adhesive snot after removing the sticker, like you observed. Of course, your boat may have stickers that used a different adhesive, which...

1981 Sportcraft 270 repair underway - transom, stringers, & repower

I bought some PVA but ended up not liking it. It's difficult to see once applied and dried and then how do you know you've got it all off? I'm sure it has its place, but I much prefer just adding wax to the last layer of glass/gelcoat. If you use laminating resin (no wax) and don't use PVA or...

1981 Sportcraft 270 repair underway - transom, stringers, & repower

Any time it's feasible, I pre-wet the mat-side of my 1708 on a sheet of plastic laid on a flat area, then after wetting, transfer the cloth to the area where it will be laid. The only time I do not use this method is for large areas like the top surface of the deck, where transferring a large...

1981 Sportcraft 270 repair underway - transom, stringers, & repower

While that's probably true, who grinds/sands down the edges of their tabbing? I think there's arguments for both ways, but I just went with smallest first, as it made the most sense to me.

1981 Sportcraft 270 repair underway - transom, stringers, & repower

3 layers of tabbing seems excessive to me, but if you've got the time, materials, and desire, go for it. I did 2 layers. I also have a strong preference for doing as much wet-on-wet layup as possible. Wet-on-wet is doable with 2 layers of tabbing...with 3 layers things might start to get away...

1996 Century Boats 1800 Center Console Refit and Modernization

What are you using to remove the decals/residue? I was very impressed with the 3M Stripe Off Wheel on a battery powered drill. Make sure the surface of the wheel is moving against the direction you are moving the drill. I removed reg numbers and pinstripes from my entire boat using one...

1987 Power Play XLT-185 - floors, stringers, and upholstery

Finished the floor drain today. I used a hole saw to cut the hole then PB'd in a conduit fitting. I supported the bottom surface with plastic and blocks of wood. After it cured, I cut it down to height and shaped the depression in the floor so the drain will sit pretty close to flush. I...

1981 Sportcraft 270 repair underway - transom, stringers, & repower

I got 4+ wears out of my tyvek suits. I bought 3 and only used 2. I have been able to wash my clothes I wore during demo and grinding [under the tyvek], but they are dedicated fiberglassing clothes now. I only wear them when doing glass work.

1987 Power Play XLT-185 - floors, stringers, and upholstery

Got the two rear side panels tabbed in today, and tabbed the back edge of the bench seat to the deck as well. This closes off the bilge other than the pass-thru's under the gunwales for the wires/cables. I'm going to glass some mahogany pads to the deck in a few spots for attaching the...

1981 Sportcraft 270 repair underway - transom, stringers, & repower

Thanks man! I'm a newbie to this, but this board and a few YouTube channels have really helped me do good work and make progress. You'll get there. Just be careful with the flap discs. I took a chunk out of one of my fingers with the grinder 8 months ago and at this point I'm gonna say I'll...

1981 Sportcraft 270 repair underway - transom, stringers, & repower

This is when you use the 40 grit flap disc on an angle grinder. I bought my flap discs on Amazon for $16 for a 10-pack. Ended up using three 10-packs on my boat restoration. This is what my transom looked like after removing the wood and hitting the surface with a belt sander (36 grit) to get...

1987 Power Play XLT-185 - floors, stringers, and upholstery

Ah, it does look like a bilge hose fitting - I think that's what you're talking about? It's actually a floor drain. I'm going to mount it in front of the bench seat so the passenger area will drain into the ski locker, which will drain into the bilge. The boat originally had no provision to...

1987 Power Play XLT-185 - floors, stringers, and upholstery

Got the ground wires run from fuel fill neck to tank, and tank to the rear. Also got the nav light on the bow wired up. Hope I don't have to crawl up in the bow much more...it's pretty tight in there. No pics of all that. Finished glassing the two rear side panels and got them set in place...

Just wait till you actually start grinding the old tabbing down. Now THAT is pure agony.

Mine isn't removable, but I've still got access ports so I can get to the sender and all hose connections.

    1992 Rinker Captiva 186

Gotcha - agree, it will need to be supported back at the original height. Mine was not like that - it was sitting all the way down before I pulled the screws out.

    1992 Rinker Captiva 186

I'm not sure what you're asking. To separate the halves, I removed the rub rail, pulled the screws holding the cap onto the hull, then I used a paint scraper to break the silicone bond between the cap and hull. After that I wedged the cap up high enough to get a 2x4 between the cap and hull...

Got the side supports cut out of 1/2" plywood and got 1 coat of resin down on one side.
