    Engine replacement

Just be aware if you are looking at Jegs...their lead times may be deceiving. I bought a long block in March/April from them with a posted 1 week lead time on their website. After 2 weeks I called them and they said it would be 2+ months. I got my money back and decided to just rebuild what I...

Determining Whether or not to Rebuild 1990 17' Larson

I can get my boat/trailer in the garage with the drive and swim platforms removed...with about 8" to spare from the tongue of the trailer to the garage door. If you can manage to get it in the garage with the drive off, it will be a much better place to work...other than grinding...it took 2...

Determining Whether or not to Rebuild 1990 17' Larson

Based on your first post and project-mindedness, it sounds like you're going to do great on this. You sound similar to me...I've never owned or driven a boat before and jumped right into my project. Fortunate for you, you at least got yours on the water some at first...mine went straight into...

    Grew 168 restoration

You can buy marine fuel hose with either an A1 or A2 rating. Figure out what size you need and google it...lots of places carry it. If I remember, you should use A1 hose from the tank to the engine. You can use either A1 or A2 hose for the vent/fill hoses. I'm pretty sure I just went with A1...

    Transom rebuild questions

If I recall the jig was north of $500. As much as I love tools, I don't think this "one and done" tool is worth it. Some folks use a tool they can mount to their portable drill that holds the drill square to the surface. Others have just drilled a hole in a block of wood on a drill press and...

    PVC stringers?

I'd stick with wood....or if you've got money, Coosa Bluewater 26.

    Floatation Foam in Closed Space

Why don't you want to drill fill/vent holes from the top? That seems like the easiest way to me. Honestly you'd probably be OK leaving that small volume under the engine mounts without foam. I used the US Composites 2 lb density expanding urethane foam in my boat. If you use it at ambient...

    Transom rebuild questions

I used an angle grinder with a sanding cylinder. The Mercruiser jig uses a hole saw. We will find out if my reliefs are big enough in a few weeks when I go to install the gimbal housing. If not...more grinding to make the reliefs big enough, then glass and gelcoat to seal it back up.

    Tearing down transom assembly

Thanks. It wasn't too bad, but trying to get the u-joint bellows on before the adhesive set up and get the water hose on the bell housing and hose clamps oriented correct, etc...it was a little nerve wracking. I'm sure it gets easier the more you do it. Also, the folks at BAM Marine...

    Restoring a 1990 Larson

Man I'm jealous of where you live...at least in the warm months! I've spent a week of vacation at a cabin on Keuka Lake about a decade ago - what a beautiful place. Also had some training near Cayuga Lake so got to see some of that too. Not sure my thin blood could handle those winters...

1987 Power Play XLT-185 - floors, stringers, and upholstery

I'm pretty sure I troweled PB onto both the boat and the transom. I used a plastic v-notch trowel with 1/4" notches that I got for a few bucks on Amazon. Not sure how much PB...maybe three 17 oz batches? I know my wife made a few.

    Tearing down transom assembly

Got it all back together. Managed to scratch the paint some while wrangling the bell housing back on. My boat has thru-hull exhaust, so no exhaust bellows to worry about. But still...lots of hose clamps and reaching into tiny cracks to get it all back together...glad to be done with it.

    Building a '93 Caravelle 1750 Classic Bowrider

Congrats on the splash, Mark! Some bugs to work out, but still a successful splash

method of joining new wood to existing stringer

They didn't use glass because they didnt build the boat to last. Adding glass will be a superior repair.

method of joining new wood to existing stringer

Agreed. I'd get rid of the lip and run the new floor out to the hull.

    Stringer and Bulkhead Questions

Yeah...I would plan on just bedding all the stringers.

method of joining new wood to existing stringer

1 - I wouldn't do the lag bolts. 2 - I'm not a structural expert, but I was told you want a 12:1 scarf joint, ideally. 45-degrees is 1:1. Now, if you put enough glass over it, the wood just basically becomes a core to support the glass, and the glass carries the load. Not sure how much...

    1998 Bayliner Capri floor.

Just know that for full length stringers, if you have a run that is longer than 96", you're going to have to do a scarf joint, or sister two boards together, or something to get the added length. I built a jig for my router and made scarf joints, copying PC on the Bayou.

    Floor and Transom Rebuild

I know my original fear with using PB was that it was going to set up too fast before I could get everything clamped. I had never worked with fiberglass before my boat project, so I had no experience with resin kick times. I think some other folks may try to avoid using PB for the same...
