    Stringer and Bulkhead Questions

I think you should be fine. My boat has 5 stringers...I replaced the two long ones first, then went back and replaced the other 3 after the new long ones were in place. The upside to doing it this way (for me) was that the hull was still somewhat supported by the original stringers (which...

I'm in TN, so much closer to FL. My freight was about $140 each time I ordered.

    Polyester resin ?

If you buy from US Composites and are buying more than one 5-gal bucket, get them to quote you for freight. You don't have to pay the hazmat fee on freight, and if you're buying more stuff, it may come out cheaper.

    1998 Bayliner Capri floor.

I ended up doing what you're describing. My boat originally had the bulkhead as one complete piece and the stringers were broken up into separate pieces fore and aft of the bulkhead. When I rebuilt mine, I did full length stringers and pieced together the bulkhead. It made sense in my mind...

1987 Power Play XLT-185 - floors, stringers, and upholstery

I'd buy 5 gal of resin, 6-10 yards of 1708, and 6-10 yards of CSM. Probably a little overkill, but not by a lot. Just go ahead and buy the 4-gal pail of cabosil and the 4lb tub of milled fibers. Yes, I used cabosil to make my PB.

Area near motor mount/transom delamination and crack.

Hate it for you. My brother is planning to use the Arjay stuff on his Glastron CV-19, but he hasn't started on it yet.

1987 Power Play XLT-185 - floors, stringers, and upholstery

Suburban engine is mostly back together...hoping to drop it back in the truck this coming weekend. I've been working here and there on the gimbal housing. It's finally started going back together.

    Tearing down transom assembly

More reassembly tonight. Got the new lower shift cable (no pic) and the shift shaft in the bellhousing, and also got the gimbal ring installed into the gimbal housing, with clearance set and everything torqued. I verified my trim limit switch functions and the sender sweeps from about 1-200...

    Stringer to Transom Joint Question

I use the little medicine cups that come with kid's medicine. It's also what US Composites puts in with their MEKP. I also tried one of those MEKP dispensing squeeze bottles and didn't like it. Not sure about the different resin manufacturers and catalyst recommendations - I've only used US...

    Plywood floor replacement...Questions

Agree with PC. The oscillating multitool is a must-have - use a respirator to protect from the fiberglass dust.

Area near motor mount/transom delamination and crack.

Just a guess...but I bet the motor mount is rotten and has sunk, allowing the fiberglass to break because it can't support the weight of the engine by itself. I would drill a core sample of the engine mount and prepare yourself for bad news.

    Stringer to Transom Joint Question

Gap size isn't an issue - just means you'll need more PB in that area. Make sure you're making "hairy" PB with milled fibers in it. I find the angle of a purpose-made piping bag is much better for dispensing PB than the 90-degree angle of a zip-lock bag with the corner cut off. The icing bag...

    Restoring a 1990 Larson

What a great job, man! Very happy for you. When you get a chance, pull up the teak hatch cover, disassemble, run it through a planer to just skim cut the oxidized surface off, sand, oil, and reinstall. I was amazed at how much better my ski locker hatch looked after doing this. I'll be doing...

What are these pads made from?

To me it looks like big dabs of some kind of filler. My boat had some of that kind of material that behaved like body filler when I sanded / grinded on it.

    1973 Glastron CV-16 Restoration

1 - You have to tab in the new supports, and you should grind the old fiberglass to give the new tabbing a good surface to grab onto. My boat has 5 stringers with maybe 12" between each stringer. If my 2nd layer of tabbing on the stringers extends out 6", then adjacent stringers would have...

Why an increase in engine horsepower will hurt your ‘holeshot’, acceleration and midrange cruising.

In the turbocharged 4-cylinder game, we call it "area under the curve". The more useable (and fun...and faster on the street) car is the one that makes less HP but has a flatter power curve, as opposed to the one that makes a really high peak HP number but the turbo doesn't light until really...

    Stringer to Transom Joint Question

I cut my stringers as close as I could to the transom, but inevitably there was a small gap, so I just piped in PB and tabbed. I have been using the large icing piping bags from the grocery store - I can mix up 17 oz of resin and make PB and it fills the bag nicely.

    Re-carpeting 18.5 Bowrider Need advice

For snap in, I'm guessing you still glue in the carpet on the sides and other vertical surfaces, and then just snap in the horizontal surfaces? Gelcoat the fiberglass underneath the snapped in carpet? 3M 4000 UV on the snap hardware? If my guess about gluing in the sides is correct, how does...
