Cracked fuel pump

The pump cannot operate without a vacuum port, if you examine it carefully, you'll find that in addition to the fuel lines there is a fitting on the back side of the pump that attaches via a hose, to another fitting on the intake port cover. The only exception to this are pumps that bolt...

1961 Mercury 700 FGS, impeller service and inspection

Here's a NOS Merc replacement pump kit which was meant (I'm assuming) as an upgrade to the style of pump that's in your 700 FGS: http://www.ebay.com/itm/121645127637 This kit changes the location of the water tube, from its current position in the upper pump body, to entering thru a grommet in...

Please help wits end Thunderbolt ignition

Just regular ol' ground wires for the switchbox, so you could make up some with some 12- or 14-gage primary wire and solderless crimps. The originals use marine-grade wire so would be more durable, but the home-made ones will do in a pinch. The OEM's are around $8.00 each.

    Mercury 100 throttle cable adjust

Actually that piece has a slot in one end, and the other end has a hook that snaps into the "rivet". As I recall the top end unsnaps, so take a real close look at it and I bet you'll be able to see how it works. HTH..........ed

60hp Mercury (1990?) shift shaft bushing removal

Yeah, you're right on that one. Looks like the pump plate holds down the bushing; that's a newer design which presses into the gear housing. The shoulder on the bushing should keep it from going deeper into the gearcase. The retaining clip on the shift shaft keeps the shaft from pulling out...

what does the cross pin slide do?

The cross-pin slide has the shift clutch cross-pin (#62) passing thru it. The smaller-diameter portion of the slide contains the shift clutch spring and on the other end, the shift cam follower (#54) pushes against the slide (and consequently the shift clutch) to shift to Neutral and Reverse...

    Mercury/Tracker 60hp Shift Shaft Issue

Sometimes it helps to turn the propeller or the driveshaft while you're attempting to shift. Keep in mind that the shaft turns CCW to shift from Fwd (where there is indeed a lot of slop, which doesn't matter 'cause of the way it's designed) to Neutral. And further CCW to shift to Reverse...

2007 mercury 50 hp l/u stuck in forwrd

Well, ain't that fun! I expect yours looks something like the one in the diagrams below. The newer L/U ain't built quite the same, so there isn't a shift cam "lost" in the L/U ('cause it's on the end of the shift shaft!), but there is still a clutch spring and cam follower. So, when you...

Starter rope does not engage when pulling on 2000 Mercury 9.9 2 stroke

You'll probably need to unbolt the recoil starter assy for inspection. Likely the old grease has hardened and is not letting the starter pawl(s) engage the flywheel. A little clean and a re-lube usually gets 'em going again. I've attached a diagram of the recoil assy for your viewing...

    unregulated voltage question

Sometimes the type of battery used affects the peak voltage; these systems were designed for lead-acid batteries. You can turn on the running lights and that'll probably drop voltage down to a reasonable level. Later model Mercs use a combination regulator/rectifier assembly, and these can be...

1973 mercury 7.5 hp carburetor questions

Looking up your motor by serial #, it would appear that your carb used the thicker-diameter venturi, P/N 64247, which is indeed NLA from Merc. I checked the next serial # run of carbs & found that somewhere in-between Merc went to a different-style, smaller-diameter venturi, P/N 69764, which is...

    1964 merc 85hp 850 I/L 6 interchangeable 85hp 3cylinder parts

Re: 1964 merc 85hp 850 I/L 6 interchangeable 85hp 3cylinder parts Well...........if you were really really creative you could take the power trim 'n tilt setup off the 85hp Triple and splice it into the 85 Hp Inline Six. But it'd be quite a bit of work, involving removal of the powerhead on...

    1976 650 tilt trim needed

Re: 1976 650 tilt trim needed The older Mercs used a 2-ram setup, with the hydraulic cylinders (rams) mounted on brackets, in place of the shock absorbers. This was a 2-hose-per-cylinder PT&T with the pump mounted inboard, under the motor splashwell. Your best bet would be to find a parts...

Crankshaft repair sleeve for lower seals 71 Merc 800 (confused)

Re: Crankshaft repair sleeve for lower seals 71 Merc 800 (confused) You definitely want to use the 86349A1 repair kit. This is meant for a crankshaft such as yours and will go right over the O.D. of the crankshaft to provide a new sealing surface for the worn area. Be very careful when...

Fuel-to-Oil Mixture Ratio for Older Mercury Outboards

    mercury 125 classic impeller replacement

According to the www.mercurypartsexpress.com site, a $24.20 impeller part # 47- 43026T 2 should do the trick. Just plug your ser # into the site's query box and you should be able to look up any part you need for your motor. HTH.........ed

    '71 J-125 Ign Pulse Pack

Anyone have a good used one of these? Working on a motor that's not really worth dumping the price of a new box into. P/N: 398362.

I was also wondering if there's any possibility of upgrading this old, cantankerous ign to something different or newer? I've got tons of Merc inline...
