    Cars you should have kept.

Not a collectible but wish I still had: Fiberfab Dune Buggy built off a 1956 VW, with a 1200 cc 40 hp engine lol 1989 Toyota Corolla GTS sport coupe it had the same 1600 cc twin cam engine as the MR2. Fast and fun.

    5.0GXi Starter Replacement

When you use their bolts you’re pretty much guaranteed that they won’t be too long and bottom out, which can allow the starter to move. The issue is that there are many manufacturers making after market starters to fit Chevrolet marine engines and the dimensions of the starter case can be...

Ford 302 engine oil dipstick - 1995 OMC Cobra, Ford 302, VolvoSX

It looks like the 5.0 & 5.8 Fords were used by OMC from 1989 to 1996. Not sure if Volvo did the same….

Ford 302 engine oil dipstick - 1995 OMC Cobra, Ford 302, VolvoSX

Hard to say I wonder if you could put out this question to forum members that have OMC/Volvo Ford engines in that age range. If you look at that catalog link I posted you can check to see how many model years that part number was used on the Ford 5.0 V8.

Ford 302 engine oil dipstick - 1995 OMC Cobra, Ford 302, VolvoSX

https://www.marineengine.com/parts/omc-parts/omc-boat-parts.php?year=1995&hp=5.0&model=502APHUB&manufacturer=OMC+stern+drive&section=Oil+Pan+%26amp%3B+Oil+Pump based on the part number here it looks like you have the right dip stick, but don't know why it has both the dimples and hash marks I'd...

    5.0GXi Starter Replacement

Hmm not sure, I have never used it and had a few different starters in my engine over the years and never had a loose starter bolt, nor did I have one that wouldn't come out.

Ford 302 engine oil dipstick - 1995 OMC Cobra, Ford 302, VolvoSX

I'm wondering since OMC/Volvo used both GM and Ford engines, if they used the same dipstick and different markings on both, you could figure that out by checking part #s. I have a similar system on my '88 4.3, but it just has the hash marks no dimples that I've noticed but next time I'm at the...

    New Stuff on Vehicles likes/dislikes

Gateways that require you to pay extra to run a scan like on Stellantis vehicles 2019 & up. You pay for the scanner, then pay for the subscription for it, then to get past the gateway!

    5.0GXi Starter Replacement

Knurling keeps it from getting loose; yes it’s tough to get a torque wrench in there but when you have been doing this for a long time you just can feel it. Not bubba tight but tight. Loose starter bolts will allow the starter to shift under torque and can break the bolts leading to grief!

Engine, Carb or Prop? need suggestions or ideas please.

Did you check the tension on the secondary air door spring? That’s a major source of Quadrajet bog, those secondary air doors opening too soon… May need to tighten it up….remember on these carbs the actual secondary blades are mechanically operated but no air gets sucked in till the air doors...

    Erratic tachomether

I might want to hook up a voltmeter to your I terminal (Ignition) on the switch and see what voltage it’s getting when the tach acts up. Also some OMCs have high resistance in the charging sense circuit and this can cause overcharging at the battery yet you may see low voltage read out on the...

Volvo Penta 5.7 GXI Fuel in Oil Runs smooth at idle

Agreed it doesn’t make sense; id be thinking of doing an air pressure test of the cooling passages to see if they hold pressure….

    I should add a 2nd battery...

I've been getting 7 years average from the lead acid GP 27 dual purpose batteries I use. My boat is covered but of course some water always gets in and I have never had a dead battery from whatever time the bilge pump has to run.

    5.0GXi Starter Replacement

I’ve used ARCO with good results for my starter & alternator. Not the cheapest but good. Make sure to use their knurled bolts & torque to spec. Loose bolts on a Chevy style starter make bad things happen!

    I should add a 2nd battery...

I added the dual battery system w/ 1, 2, 1+2 and off switch & all new cables about 20 years ago, I keep the boat on a mooring that is basically right behind where I live, private beach assn., so I can always monitor it and get to it, but still nice to have redundancy. I just alternate use of the...

Bought my first boat to cut, gut and rebuild from bow to stern, including engine. Killed my back and suffered the wrath of the fiberglass demons

Remember it’s America anybody can sue anybody. I wouldn’t rent it. You own it, if someone gets hurt or hurts someone else they come after you. That’s why people with assets have umbrella insurance policies!

    The Hull Truth present form.

Grady is not even at the top of the preference list. When I see center consoles (for our climate in the Northeast are useless) with 3 300 hp outboards, that is a level of elitism that is a real turn off. I put my money into real estate, not toys, and I am pretty happy about those outcomes! A...

    Oil selection

However most inboard engine manufacturers recommend running at 75% of redine or approx 3500 rpm. If you do that, and make sure the boat reaches the specified max RPM & doesn't run hot, use good oil that doesn't break down...you should get at least 2,000 hrs if not a lot more. Also regardless of...

    The Hull Truth present form.

The main thing about the hull truth is it is biased toward ultra expensive salt water fishing boats with (to me at least) overpriced outboard power. If you run an I/O some think you're part of a failed cult or something, but in a large part of the USA and Canada as well I/Os are fine to use...
