    Strange engine sound need help

It looks like the pulley on the raw water pump has a build up of rust. That can cause belt failure. It can be cleaned with wire wheel on a drill or take it off then have it glass bead blasted and powder coated.

    Strange engine sound need help

I agree that it appears to be belt related. They are not supposed to walk back and forth in the pulleys. Is that the original belt?

Pressure/Vacuum Test Lower Unit Sterndrive Merc Alpha One Gen One.

The main purpose of the lower seal is to protect the upper seal. Once the lower leaks the lower end of the driven gear will rust which causes the leak. If you can, try to pressure the upper case, I am pretty sure it will not hold pressure. The bottom line is you will have to take the upper...

water in engine, is it salvageable?

What year is your boat? Something to also consider whichever route you take, be sure to replace the thermostat and the water pump in the drive.

Removing Castle Nut or Retainer Ring on a Mercruiser Alpha One Gen One Sterndrive.

I would only use the genuine Mercruiser seals as replacements. In the past I have removed them very carefully by drilling a small hole and with self tapping screws and patience without damaging the shaft. I later bought the tool.

Removing Castle Nut or Retainer Ring on a Mercruiser Alpha One Gen One Sterndrive.

It was a 5 Star tool set made for all the popular propeller shaft sizes. I just found one for $750.00 Needless to say I cannot remember what it cost me many years ago. However it paid for itself at the time. I was always a “special tool freak”. They pay for themselves and do not call in sick!

Alpha1 Gen1 Does Not Engage FWD or REV

After pulling the boat out, lower the drive, remove the 4 bolts on the top cover. If the drive ran dry the gears will be $hreaded

Removing Castle Nut or Retainer Ring on a Mercruiser Alpha One Gen One Sterndrive.

Put 10-15 lbs on the drive first. If the prop seals are leaking you will see it. As Bondo said drilling 2 holes about 2” apart and chipping out the piece. Then use the tool, the sharp edge where the piece was removed will act as a thread chaser cleaning out the crud that has built up between...

    Mercruiser engine to omc outdrive

Sorry, my bad for some reason I thought the OMC engine was on a Merc platform. Get a genuine OMC service manual. Crowley Marine has them and also a good stock of parts.

    Exhaust Manifold question

Another thing about your particular set up. Hopefully your manifolds are mounted with bolts instead of studs. There are some really good aluminum manifolds available now that will hold up. EMI and Imco are 2 examples. You never said which brand of marine engines you have.

    2008 moomba shaft

It also would be good to re check the alignment with the boat in the water before bolting the flanges together. It is possible that the trailer has caused the stringers to slightly shift over time. There are tools that will remove and replace the cutlass bearing without removing the strut...

    Steering helmet pin

Your helmet is the style that is mounted using 2 socket head screws going through a larger slug that fits into a receiver cavity on the front of the gear housing. The flange on the gear housing that the bolt is screwed into is the earlier 280 style. If the original helmet from the previous...

Where are the rear motor mounts on a mercruiser 120?

If the bolts are rusted in the core of the rear motor mounts and corroded in the inner transom plate you have a real problem. I have had to use a cutting torch a few times. The area under the bottom of the flywheel housing is where the cut has to be made. Needless to say it gets real nasty by...

Mercruiser 170 - Spark at distributor, not plugs

Mercruiser 170 - Spark at distributor, not plugs

With the points closed can you force them open by pushing on the rotor shaft? Worn out rotor shaft bushings can cause ignition problems. Even with a worn out distributor the rotor would still contact the distributor cap. Are you getting a blue spark out of the coil wire? What are you gapping...

Mercruiser 170 - Spark at distributor, not plugs

The spark from coil wire to ground has to be blue and jump at least 1”. If you are using some of the cheap auto store parts that could be your problem. There has to be 12 v at the + or bat side of the coil when in the cranking mode. You need to verify that. NAPA still has good quality ignition...

    OMC 1986 Bayliner Capri.

I can assure you that there will be water in the upper gear case. Take a large screwdriver and just loosen the lower drain screw on the side of the upper gear case. Cost of repair, mucho denaro!
