Well it happened. Water in oil

Down at the bottom of the water jacket is the thinnest part of the block. That is usually where the it leaks at. If you flip it over and pull the pan you will see a rust spot where the hole is. Just as AD said you got your use out of it for 40 years. Quite a few never lasted that long.

    496 bravo 3 3000 RPM plus overheat

I saw the insides of a Bravo where the mating water passages were eroded to a point that exhaust gasses were entering into the incoming water.

I see you have Captain’s call exhaust. Just curious, when the boat was full throttle was there a difference in top speed & rpm with open or closed exhaust? Nice looking engine and boat. The reason I asked this is the previous owner of my 18’ Donzi with the 383 MPI said it would do 70 With open...

The ole rope in the prop

Also first disconnect the shift cable from the control box at the engine and check that the bind is not in the control box.

    Early EZ Shift outdrive questions

It probably has full power trim. The transom bolt pattern is the same as well as every thing from the engine to the drive. If you reuse your current engine the only thing that might be slightly different is the wire harness for the power trim. Make sure that the shift cable, gimbal bearing and...

    Sterndrive multiple leaks

If there is oil running down the vertical shaft from under the upper housing you will have to completely reseal the upper and may need a “speedy sleeve “to repair the surface on the lower driven gear.

Any idea what year the doner boat is?

Exhaust flapper fell down in the exhaust tube

I would first try to get it by removing the exhaust bellows, with the drive all the way up there should be enough room to reach it.

    Early EZ Shift outdrive questions

Wherever you are hopefully there will be a marine salvage yard. There is one here in the New Orleans area. They take a chainsaw and cut out the area around the gimbal housing after pulling the engine. As stated maybe you can find a rotted Bayliner with a good drive platform.

Need to replace Chevy 350 long block in boat

The auto 350 will work but as Bondo said not as good as the marine/truck version. You will need to replace the core plugs with brass ones. Hopefully the current engine has the marine Quadrajet and ignition otherwise the replacement may not perform right and an auto version is not marine...

    '86 OMC Stringer Sterndrive...impeller R&R video?

With the muffs on the drive, remove the hose that brings water to the thermostat housing, start the engine. Does water come out the hose? If so try to hold it back with your hand while someone revs the engine. If you can stop it easily then the pump is installed wrong. If you cannot hold it...

    Milky oil?

Heat up a piece of sheet metal over a fire then put a few drops of the oil on the metal, if the oil just smokes it is good. If it pops and sizzles then water is mixed in it.

    Throttle Lever Replacement

If it is a Bayliner it is probably not a genuine Mercury Marine control. Most likely that style is not made anymore. You may have to have it bead blasted and powder coated.

    2.3L OMC Carb Questions?

Hopefully you a “spin on” style of fuel/water separator. If you have access to the top of the tank try draining it and remove the crud. Sierra Marine has a filter kit that comes with a USCG approved filter kit with a clear bottom bowl that is drainable. You should be able to locate this kit...

Chevy 283 w Mallory distributor question.

That makes sense. Makes the boat nicer. Typical boat builder, “lets see how hard we can make the engines serviceable”!

Chevy 283 w Mallory distributor question.

Chris Craft ran the transmission off the front of the engine so that in a twin engine set up both engines stayed at standard rotation. It may be necessary to pull the manifold with the distributor in it. Breaking it off at the manifold would not be good Maybe some heat at the base of the...

    merc 260 valve cover leak

You might have some luck with a 1/4”Drive 7/16” universal socket. You may find it at Lowe’s or maybe one of the tool truck salesman like Snap on. Lay the valve cover upside down in a vise and tap down the area area of the holes. Wire wheel the gasket surface. Try to locate a valve cover gasket...

    Starter wont engage flywheel.

On AD’s # 34 post the troubleshoot procedure refers to post “E” which provides 12v to the coil. You need to test the female side of the connector that there is 12v present when the engine is cranking mode. There may be 12v with the key on before cranking but not when cranking. So it may be a...
