Correct time to winterize stern drive engine?

Just keep the drains drained until you use it and then drain when you get home

Coupler pin lock & tow hitch receiver pin lock

I don’t use a drawbar lock but I use a harbor freight coupler lock when I remember to put it in. No it doesn’t really secure anything but insurance company might make an easier payout if I show a cut lock. It cost $10 so either way it doesn’t really hurt anything

Verify outdrive lube is clean without totally dumping it?

We’ll water should be at the bottom so you could just check it but. I’d spend the $20 and do it right

Put rear tires on front. If shake moves to front replace those tires. Ply separation may be visible on a balancer if so

Front wheel drive launching & retrieving

My dad towed a 18’ StarCraft offshore with a Fwd 5spd Jeep Compass and it was doable. No it wasn’t the best tow vehicle. Lot of comments at the launch but it always did it for the short time he pulled the boat with it. An oddessy will tow a Jon boat no problem

Mercruiser Ride Guide Steering Cable Help!

I think the steering wheel is a standard thing. I know my 1966 StarCraft with cable drum steering can accept a modern steering wheel. can even get tilt helms now

    Mercontrol Shifter Issues

Mercury used the same control basically until the early 80s. If your control is mechanical only, then you can basically buy one on the used market and pull the wiring out of it. Later ones are black

complete Alpha one Gen one retrofit into older boat.

If the gimbal bearing is still good should I leave it? I planned on new just because. The donor boat had sat from 2014 to 2022 before someone bought it to bring it back to life and gave up because he couldn’t get it running right. I determined how long it sat by peeling the 2024 sticker off. But...

Should I swap the gimbal bearing and bellows in the donor boat? Or can that be done on the bench?

So I have the balance bead calculator right on my phone. And 3 ounce would be right. But if you add 4 oz you effectively put enough beads in for a tire twice the size

Yup that’s the plan. I use them all the time and have the spreader but they can be sketchy. I have them for my little tractor which is about the size of a terramite. But he does not have forks so I’ll use them on his big tractor

complete Alpha one Gen one retrofit into older boat.

That’s a good idea. I actually need to decide what I’m doing with that trailer because I may put the boat on another one I have. And the donor boat has a really nice galvanized shoreline trailer but it’s a 16’ boat so I don’t know if the 18’ will fit it. I have 2’ for the tongue to come ahead...

My plan is to put the trailer on 4.80x8 tires for the swap which will drop it about 6” and get that height to clear the gunnel. I also think hooking the lift chains together with a heavy duty ratchet strap will allow me to pull them together and get a couple inches

Oh okay I was worried about my clamp on pallet forks but at 500 lbs they won’t have an issue. It’s actually a fairly new tractor. I just need the forks to extend the reach

How much does a 3.0 weigh? I plan on using my girlfriends fathers 80hp loader tractor with clamp on pallet forks to extend the reach. I know the loader has the height to do it

    Wooden stringers

Douglas fir is a species of pine tree. Home Depot has been selling it for years near me. Id never recommend pressure treat for stringers. It needs to be bone dry to tab with fiberglass and you won’t ever get it that dry from a yard. It also twists as it dries.

    LS Swap...?

It’s a mile of work to put an ls in a boat. But ls swap a car is fairly easy these days with Holley Terminator X. Converting a harness stand-alone is a mile of work
