Manifolds (Trying to figure out what I am looking at)

I think the hard part is trying to figure if water intrusion is due to reversion or static water line issues. Two totally different things. Reversion apparently became more of an issue with the introduction of the Vortec engines especially on the V6. In fact Volvo changed the shape of the 90*...

    . . . and I Thought Hi-tech Boat Engines Were Bad . . .

These three work just fine for me and can be rebuilt over and over again, unlike electronic mystery boxes and $1000 fuel pumps

2 Mercruiser 5L EFI with all 16 Cylinders of 175 psi or more??

the consistent readings are the main thing, and they are very consistent. now it would be good if you also had an oil analysis

    . . . and I Thought Hi-tech Boat Engines Were Bad . . .

the old way is better.....you can suck out most of the oil in the trans pan before removing it thereby avoiding a big mess. Next time it's getting a pan with a drain plug Common sense is not so common....

    . . . and I Thought Hi-tech Boat Engines Were Bad . . .

The lastest goofy trend no engine oil dipsticks you read the level on your info screen What convinced me that modern designers lost their mind was watching the procedure to check the auto trans level on a ZF 850HP auto trans (used on many German cars, many Chrysler products and Land Rovers)...

    Exhaust Riser?

In the fall I'm going to replace my elbows because by then they will have been used in salt for 5 seasons. The manifolds I will inspect the sealing surfaces and acetone test. Then evaluate. So far no signs of leaks either outside or in cyls. I have a local dealer where I can buy Barr Marine...

Manifolds (Trying to figure out what I am looking at)

Yep I think you’re right it would be on both sides if condensation. With it happening on only one side it’s something unique to the exhaust on that side.

Manifolds (Trying to figure out what I am looking at)

You have a good point there; especially on a “cold manifold” system where the manifold/elbow gets water flow all the time. Merc came out with the warm manifold system for this reason where the elbows always get water flow but the manifolds don’t until the stat opens. This keeps the manifolds...

Manifolds (Trying to figure out what I am looking at)

The manifolds are new Mercruiser but did you check sealing surfaces for flatness & level with a straight edge & feeler gauges? This is especially important with wet joint exhaust. I’d go back & do that. See what Merc’s spec is.

    Exhaust Riser?

You can test manifolds by filling the water passages with Acetone and watching for leaks at the exhaust ports. Careful though because it’s quite flammable. It has lower surface tension than water so that’s why it may show leaks where water won’t. Best done with the elbow removed.

    Outboard conversion w/out a bracket??

I have seen some of these done over at www.thehulltruth.com they usually use some kind of transom extension though and the inside of the transom has to be extensively strengthened due to the different forces and greater weight on the transom vs an I/O. It is very expensive, time consuming and is...

    Exhaust Riser?

They do look pretty good, you'll be able to tell better when the sealing surfaces are totally cleaned up.

    Exhaust Riser?

Yep you replace them, it is not a complex job However, the not running part, is a seperate problem, probably related to it not being used for 5 years. Probably have bad fuel that needs to be pumped out and the fuel system cleaned from the pump to the carb (or fuel injection). And running it...

Sounds like someone already had a boat with a Yamaha drive and replaced the original engine with a later model Merc.

Oil change interval, synthetic or no, curious what we all do

I do try to follow exactly what the OEM says to use, especially during warrantee, the one time it became confusing was when there was a spat (or so it seemed) between FCA and Mobil. At one time Mobil 1 had full approval in Chrysler products but that changed when Fiat bought into them, Fiat was...

    Bellows replacement

Yep and the play on words that they used: Quicksilver is old time miner slang for Mercury! Even on my old OMC where you can't find parts everywhere, I always use OEM for bellows, impellers, and any other critical parts. I have used Sierra gaskets between the drive and the pivot housing and...
