Remove quadrant gear and Stern leg is stuck in down position

According to post #3 the drive does in fact can be raised and lowered manually with the gear removed. If the boat was at my shop the tilt motor would have been changed by now. I wrestled with those things for over 30 years.

1988 GM 5.7 stalling when slowing down

If everything else is not causing the problem what you are describing then it could be possible the rotor gets hot in the distributor and is going to ground. When the boat is coming off of plane it loads the ignition more than when it is on plane. Get an extra rotor and see if that helps.

If you need to replace your Cobra power steering actuator here are a few tips…

It looks like it was a real PITA Lou. When I answered your question I could not remember if you had the later style that is all aluminum of the one you did have. A lot of times the steel cylinder gets a rust hole leak or one of the 2 lines between the valve and cylinder. I have that cotter...

Remove quadrant gear and Stern leg is stuck in down position

The tilt motor is not that hard to remove. A 3/8” universal 1/2” socket with a extension and ratchet will do the job. Most likely the brushes in the motor are worn or burned along with the commutator on the armature. Unbolt the quadrant, lift the drive to the 1/2 way position and Re bolt the...

Remove quadrant gear and Stern leg is stuck in down position

It can be done as long as the drive is in the full down position. If the drive is not all the way down you will wipe out the ball gears, the upper gear case and the intermediate housing. This all will happen if the ball gears wear out to the point where they “slip” over each other. When that...

Remove quadrant gear and Stern leg is stuck in down position

Did you check the 50 amp fuse that supplies current to the solenoids? Have you tried unbolting the Quadrant gear to see if the motor still runs? If the fuse is good try tapping on the motor while using a remote starter button connected to the lift solenoid. The brushes could be stuck. If the...

Remove quadrant gear and Stern leg is stuck in down position

Since the motor worked with the quadrant removed and not with it on there is a good chance the tilt motor is tired. When the quadrant was off did you run the tilt motor in both directions and also while the the quadrant was off was it easy to lift the drive up by hand or did it feel stiff?

    Ready to Install Outdrive, However...

It almost looks like the remains of the sealing ring. You need to clean that whole bellhousing, the mounting surface of the drive, the bellhousing, inspect the boot for tears, the shift linkage, especially where the shift slider travels for reverse. Also the pocket in the drive shaft housing...

1967 MFG Sprint. Steering cable Help

It looks like the average price for the kit you need is $160.00 plus the freight. The only thing which may cause an installation problem is the way the engine end attaches to the tube. The new cables have a female nut that threads on to the tube where your old cable has a male thread. Years ago...

    over heats above 3500 rpm

There is a “O” ring between the lower gear case and the intermediate housing. It seals the water passage where the lower swivels for steering. All you need to change it is some allen wrenches. You should also drain the oil first. What happens is air enters the the in coming water when the boat...

    HELP.... Broken Tilt Quadrant

When you remove the drive clean the surfaces where the saddle caps are mounted to the intermediate housing. Get a piece of plate glass that is wide enough to contact both sides of the mounting surfaces. If the plate fits with even contact on all surfaces then you just need another gear case...

    1988 OMC Cobra 3.0L engine revs/slipping

It might be the drive coupler. Reach behind the engine and feel around the shaft where it engages the coupler. If the coupler is the problem you will get some black sticky material on your hand.

Starter drives are easy to replace, buy a new one, not a rebuilt one. Rebuilt starters usually have rebuilt drives.

    Strange starter issue.

Since you suspect the harness connection then the only alternative other than replacing both the engine and instrument panel to engine harness is to cut the male&female connections and replace them with a terminal board with ring terminals.
