    Gas electric generator issues

It is best to store the carb dry and the fuel tank empty, with an oz of 2 cycle oil swished around in it, if you are not planning to use it in the near future. Leaving fuel in the tank causes it to spoil. Leaving fuel in the carb causes varnish, corrosion or both. You will want your...

What type of gas tank for '79 Johnson 35hp?

That tank looks to be from the 60's or early 70's. Make sure it is clean and has no rust. Usually the oil mixed into the gasoline keeps the rust inside under control, but it is worth a peak.

What type of gas tank for '79 Johnson 35hp?

The pressure tanks for Johnnyrude went obsolete in the fifties. Any regular outboard tank with a J/E fuel line connector will work for you. A 6 gal tank allows you to mix 1 pint of oil with the 6 gal of gasoline for a 50::1 mix.

Any tips to release fuel tank stuck by floatation foam

How about running a wire under the tank to "saw" between foam and tank. Be careful not to damage tank.

1996 Mercury 115 steering cable stuck

It may be too late now, as usually after hammering the ends flare out making removal real hard. A good way to loosen it is with a pipe wrench and penetrating oil. Rock the stuck cable end front to back with the pipe wrench, while spraying it with the penetrating oil. If she moves at all...

Surface preparation prior to applying epoxy wiping with acetone what does every on here do ?

You don't need to wipe before sanding, unless the surface has oil, grease or wax, which would contaminate the sandpaper. You can use most any solvent for this. You do want to wipe with acetone after sanding to make sure the surface is clean and free of dust.

1996 Mercury 75 hp not charging?

That behavior usually indicates that the rectifier or voltage regulator are bad. There are a lot of models of 75HP from 1996, so I cannot tell what exactly you have in the charging system. You might get a serial number or model number and look on the crowleymarine site and see what you have...

    Gas electric generator issues

The last two neglected motors I worked on were a pressure washer and a chainsaw. It took 3 carb cleanings to get 'em clean enough, mostly because the carbs are so cheaply built, it was hard to get the passages clean. The pressure washer carb had an idle jet that would not come out of the...

No clearance between starter bolt and flywheel housing on 4.3L 175hp

If memory serves, didn't the starter bolts on the 4.3l motors have special starter bolts with "tall" hex heads, to clear the flywheel housing?

Johnson 90 hp a weird one

Check your compression. Hopefully it is still good after the ride. If so, check for spark on all cylinders. Next would be carb cleaning, again.

    Carpet replacement

Snaps are fine, as are staples. The point was to make a removeable hatch over the fuel tank and not to "seal" the fuel tank under a single piece of carpet. I have had carpet in my speedboat for 50 years. That of course, has been 5 or 6 carpets, during that time. I have had minimal or no...

    Carpet replacement

Gee, if you think you need to get to the fuel tank, cut the carpet to fit over the fuel tank hatch and tuck it under and staple with SS staples. Then glue the carpet to the rest of the deck. Not sure what the objection to the glue it. If you need to pull the carpet up, and it is glued down...

    Carpet replacement

An indoor-outdoor carpet will work fine. It can have a rubber backing or no backing, it will make no difference when you stick it onto the decking with indoor-outdoor carpet cement and a notched trowel. If you use a latex cement, you need to make sure it doesn't get wet until it cures. Oil...

!996 16 Ft. Vanguard Barretta Fuel Tank Size

I don't think a lot (maybe none) of the Force motors had oil injection. Is it possible the Force was put on just before it was sold to you?

    Clunking and prop slipping

Skater, brand new replacement gearcases are about $1100 from SEI Engineering. When they give you a quote for rebuilding your gearcase, you might compare price. Mercury used to want $4K to rebuild a gearcase for their sterndrives. After the advent of the SEI brand, they had to cut their price...

    Oil leak

Doubtful the cause is a bad powerhead gasket. If using oil injection, check the oil lines for leaks. A Merc with oil injection has a reservoir that gravity feeds an oil pump, plus pressure lines to force oil from the boat mounted tank into the engine mounted tank. If the engine mounted tank...

    Oil leak

OK, not much of a smell means 2 cycle oil. That motor is 2 cycle, right?
