Fuel tank removal/ inspection questions 67 glastron crestflite.

That is a pretty obscure model here in 2024. You might trace the fuel fill hose and fuel lines to the fuel tank. If that boat has spent any time in saltwater and has an aluminum or steel tank, which is likely, I expect it to be in bad shape. Most tanks back in '67 were steel.

My turn with a old boat that has a sudden loss of ALL battery power in a 45 year old boat.

So you must turn on the bilge pump in order to start the engine? That could be an issue when you forget and need to start the engine to get out of a dangerous situation.

My '77 1500 had a tapered pinon bearing w/o a pin. Is it a show stopper for the OP?

    Sealing electrical connections?

There are marine grade butt connectors, with shrinking, adhesive lined insulators. With the right crimping tool, and a heat gun they are waterproof. The low tech solution is wire nuts with silicone caulk. For all connections, it is imperative that no water collects around them, or it will...

I would think Fluid Film would work as an anti seize in that application.

    No spark on Merc 85hp

The original floats were yellow foam. The alcohol in our fuel tends to dissolve them. Newer floats are hard plastic. They can crack and not function. Make sure the floats and float levers are good and set properly, respectively.

    No spark on Merc 85hp

Did you get the idle restrictor tube (idle jet) under the brass plug on the top of the carb? Did you clean the two or three the small holes drilled in the throat? Actually the '73 side bowl carbs also had a brass jet in the carb throat, if memory serves. The banjo filters under the caps on...

My turn with a old boat that has a sudden loss of ALL battery power in a 45 year old boat.

Just so you know, battery cables can rot out under the insulation. They tend to bulge in that area. Also, I had a positive battery cable rot out overnight when it turned to blue/green paste. It was connected to the battery, was sitting in saltwater, and had a nick in the insulation. The...

    No spark on Merc 85hp

Well, if the carbs fill, but no fuel will go thru the jets, they are either clogged or do not have adequate air flow thru their throats. The latter would be unusual, if the carb base gaskets are good and the bolts are snug. If you remove the hex bolts at the base of the bowl, fuel should drip...

I guess you could crack off the midsection. That would allow you to see into the spline area. You could try a blunt chistle on an air hammer on the crank and driveshaft and see if that can work the crank loose from the driveshaft. Alternate with heat and Penetrating oil?

Gee, my primer bulbs work just fine, and they are aftermarket. One seems to have a piece of chore-boy inside it. but it still works, just hard to pump.

Have you tried hanging the motor prop up and putting some penetrating oil into the spline area, after it cools from your torch? That tends to suck the oil into the part that is cooling. Some gearcases have the preload pin, most do not.

    Have you ever seen this?

That is your second cylinder firing and then not firing. The question is why? See what the spark plugs look like. It could be carburation, spark or possibly water in the cylinder. I never thought head gaskets needed a "Break-in" period. You might retorque the head bolts.

Fuel Dripping From The Carbs When It's Hot Out - 200HP Johnson 2001

I think it incumbent for you to figure out the origin of the leak. Your motor has a vapor separator with a needle and float, six carbs with needles and floats, plus a vapor pump, OMS pump and other components like vacuum hoses and fuel lines. Any of them could be leaking.

    Outdrive Paint & Prep

Are you planning to use antifouling paint? Doesn't sound like it. If I didn't use A-F paint on my MerCruiser, it would have been all barnacles. Zinc chromate is the best for bare aluminum. Most antifouling paints for aluminum recommend a good barrier paint to protect the aluminum. V-P paint...

Fuel Dripping From The Carbs When It's Hot Out - 200HP Johnson 2001

Those plastic carbs have a bad habit of developing warped carb bowls which leak. You might look closely and see if it is the bowl-to-body surface that is leaking. Also, check the thermostats. If they stick or collect gunk, that helps the motor overheat, helping the warpage. You should...
