Thinner for bottom paint, what to use??

Interlux is "famous" for specifying their own thinners. They have slow for brushing and fast for spraying their polyurethanes. I do use their thinners for spraying, but plain old paint thinner for cleaning brushes.

Why is gear oil leaking out of lower unit when running?

You need to smell that oil. It could be unburnt 2 cycle oil or gearoil, likely 2 cycle oil. If it smells like gasoline or oil it is 2 cycle oil. If it smells like rotten eggs, it is gear oil. 2 cycle oil is pretty normal. You might see if a carb is leaking.

Looking to Paint over Old Gelcoat.

If the paint calls for primer, be sure and use it. Some call for primer over metal and not FG, some call for primer over both. i.e. Briteside wants primer for metal, but none is necessary for fiberglass, unless fiberglass surface is crazed.

Can I use a jack plate for short shaft motor on tall transom

Using a jackplate to adapt a short shaft motor to a LS transom, means is it likely that the motor cannot tilt or trim much. If the motor is an aux, it may drag in the water. If pull start, it may be hard to get to the cord.

Thinner for bottom paint, what to use??

Paint thinner for oil based bottom paint, the same as used to clean the brushes, if you do that.

    Non-Skid - Economic Options

Water based (latex) paint will peel off in large pieces, if you use it on your deck. It won't take too long, likely 1/2 a season. If you don't want to spend too much $, get some marine enamel paint from the Home Despot. It will give a few years at least.

Looking to Paint over Old Gelcoat.

Interlux Briteside is a one-part polyurethane paint for topside use. It can be rolled and tipped for a finish that is close to sprayed. It is tough and very shiny. Marine enamels are not quite as good, but a whole lot cheaper. The question is how good do you want the boat to look?

How to choose an old 2-stroke 150/175 Merc

Maxrules does not show an XR6 with that serial number. A regular 150 or XR4 with that S/N is 1992. Does it have the smaller (4-1/4") diameter gearcase?

89 Mercury outboard 100 hp shift shaft alignment

Gee, "Whaled on it like it owed him money" seems like overkill to me. I wiggle the gearcase, tightening the nuts with my fingers until she is just about all the way mated with the midsection. Then I use a wrench/socket to tighten.

89 Mercury outboard 100 hp shift shaft alignment

Gee, the fit of the gearcase to the midsection is tight, but usually wiggling it with hands is enough to slide it in. I would watch for stripped driveshaft splines and cracks in the midsections.

    Murcury optimax 150 teplmp sesor.

Generally, on V6 Mercs, the temp sender is on one cylinder head, and the temp alarm sensor is on the other cylinder head. They will have different wire colors. The temp gauge sender wire is usually tan.

Help Getting Boat on EZLoader Trailer

The rollers/bunks are there to guide the boat onto the trailer. Too deep and they don't do that. Most times when the rollers or bunks are too deep, the boat doesn't load straight. In extreme cases the boat could fall off the trailer. If the rollers/bunks are too shallow, the worst that can...

89 Mercury outboard 100 hp shift shaft alignment

The driveshaft will align first. That should be easy if someone turns the flywheel. Remember to grease the splines. If you can tilt the motor up, it makes the gearcase lighter. The shift shaft is another matter. I often need to grab the shift shaft with a needlenose plier and move it into...

    No sparking v4

On my '98 Johnny OB, the boat harness was melted where it plugged into the engine harness. I am not sure where the short was, but the short caused the wires to melt at that point. I also found melted wires under the dashboard. In general, look for places that the wires need to bend. That is...

    Controls Suzuki

The steering cable and fuel lines should interchange. As for the throttle and shift cables, I am not sure. Mercs push the throttle closed while Johnnyrudes pull the throttle open. Both of those pull the shift cable for forward and push for reverse, but have different throws. I have not...

    2000 Johnson J90PLSSE LU identification

On my '98 Johnny 150HPV6, the air silencer has 2 connections to the recirculation system. The vapor pump has a tee and the two hoses go to the upper silencer and upper main bearing vent, respectively. The port balance tube is connected to the lower part of the silencer. Does that help?

A prop question (enertia or other versus older props)

Props with more rake tend to be higher performance. However, a lot depends on the hull and power-to-weight ratio. Some hulls can only go so fast, regardless of power. Usually, you need to be able to trim the motor, lifting the bow to gain speed. Some boats trim up more than others. My old...
