    Sound deadening

In a boat nothing sounds better than a V8. Yesterday I was out on the bay and heard the howl of a go-fast going & coming while I was out.

OMC did use the Ford small block with the Cobras but the bell housing & engine mounts are both different. At this point you have to decide if you want to switch the whole thing over to Mercruiser. If you get the right deal on a drop in it’s the way to go. I like the Cobra it’s been very good to...

Or…eventually repower to a V8 then you won’t want to muffle it!

Most of those boats came with either a 4.3 V6 or the 5.0 V8. I would stick with Chevrolet power whether you keep the Cobra drive train or convert to Mercruiser which will make your life easier. You’d need a post 1986 SBC, one piece rear main seal, could be pre-Vortec or Vortec. I have the 4.3...

1989 Bayliner Trophy OMC 5.8L - Help with new boat

Yep that sounds like what happened. Once you get it set up right it's not hard to keep it shifting well. Starting with a new cable, cleaned out pivot housing, all adjustments done you should be good. With all the bad press OMC got on these I am amazed at how reliable this boat has been. And...

Yes check very carefully for rot, especially if it had plywood decks covered in carpet. Mine had the deck replaced in 2007, outside painted in Imron 2012 and top end engine overhaul in 2017. It's a good running stable boat, I will gladly repower it when the time comes.

Check the terminals on the back of the gauge for power & ground. If good then check the tank sending unit.

    2015 Motor MerCruiser 4.5L 250hp NO EC - OVERHEATING!

Either that or get an older boat last year without cats. I’m keeping this one as long as I can when the time comes I will just get a reman 4.3. Cheapest way to do boating even though here Id also be better time wise off with an OB, I do know my way around the old Chevy small block. Nothing...

    2015 Motor MerCruiser 4.5L 250hp NO EC - OVERHEATING!

that's why a cat converter equipped inboard is a no sale for me. Not when I have to replace manifolds every 5-7 years. Especially because outboards get a pass on that.

1989 Bayliner Trophy OMC 5.8L - Help with new boat

PS those instructions are basically what I followed but I used the OMC tools that were not yet made when those manuals were published. I have an OEM 1988 Manual and the pix & procedures are basically the same. The typical problems are: cable jacket cracks, lets in water, cable gets sticky gasket...

1989 Bayliner Trophy OMC 5.8L - Help with new boat

Yes you need to be on the prop side make sure the keys are out of the ignition first! You will be able to feel if it locks in Fwd & Rev that way. The best way to get the right cable is to use the model number. These were on a sticker on the engine valve cover or thermostat housing.

1988 Bayliner Capri with a 2.3L OMC Ford cobra

My HD galvanized single axle trailer for my 20’ F/W weighs 850 lbs but that’s a roller trailer with a 6,000 axle & 12” brakes & 15” rims & 225/75-15” tires so it’s gotta be heavier than typical. I bet that trailer is 550-600 lbs.

    1988 OMC 4.3 2V - Leaking Manifolds

I don't think so, I know I replaced them at some point, might have made the replacements a bit longer than the originals. IIRC they are just 3/4" hose, you can use automotive heater hose, the water doesn't get very hot and not under much pressure either.

That looks great including the fish! Every 3 seasons or so I’d change the impeller & every 5 seasons remove the manifolds & rod out those 4 outlets. Doing that I doubt you’ll have a problem. Just watch for any water in the cyls. I never had that problem with the OMC batwings but in salt water...

My poor old Buick took a hit

I had an accident in our ‘75 Olds Delta 88 on the iced over Clearview Expressway in Queens NY back in 1980 or so. Road iced over with light snow & freezing rain came over the hill at Frances Lewis Blvd and cars were spinning out of control everywhere. A ‘64 Pontiac Lemans spun & stopped facing...

Opinions on Volvo Penta engines and drives

They have a bad habit of making certain parts NLA, the drives & transom mounts themselves are very good, maybe better than Mercruiser. Watch out for ones with either throttle body injection or port fuel injection, often ECMs for these are NLA. If it goes bad you're SOL. That and the modules for...
