    Sierra Marine Head Gaskets

I used Fel/Pro when I replaced the heads on my 4.3, they sell a marine gasket kit for the pre-Vortec 4.3s, I’m not sure what they sell for the V8s…had good luck with theirs…

I figure it saved me about $3,000 in maintenance over 10 years. My boat has not been back to a mechanic since 2006. Ive done all of it including winterizing tune ups, carb rebuilds, drive r & r & shift linkage adjustment. Also did a top engine overhaul (installed reman cyl heads) & the exhaust...

I bought it about 10 years ago. I think I paid about $175. Stumpy’s Fab Works. If you’re going to own I/O boats a long time it’s worth it.

The slits on the exhaust bellows are normal, to reduce back pressure. As long as your 4 exhaust ports are open on the batwings, you should be OK. They are small so they clog easily. Good thing you changed the flappers. You should be pulling the drive at the end of each season. I built a wood...

The Volvo SX-A is a different design than the OMC Cobra & Volvo SX both of which have a similar design. Post the question up in the Volvo section.

1989 5.7 omc propeller not spinning

When you refill these be careful…the official way to do it is to replace all 3 gaskets and reinstall the bottom most plug. Put the large dip stick plug in the top hole but do not thread in yet. Hook up your gear oil pump to the second hole up from the bottom. Slowly pump in gear oil (it should...

The Barr manifolds I used were very well cast & sealing surfaces perfect. They do need a better coat of paint to not rust in damp salt water environments; I brushed on a coat of Rustolium….

    4.3 Gl over heat

And keep in mind how different marine cooling systems are compared to auto cooling systems….an auto system is closed and runs on antifreeze with corrosion inhibitors…it can run without maintenance with long life coolants (do check for leaks & worn belts) for many years Marine systems if open or...

    4.3 Gl over heat

Average life of a cast iron exhaust system in salt water is 5-7 years. This depends on salinity of the water & how often you flush the system.

Next is your exhaust manifolds & elbows. I bet they are corroded inside and restricting water flow. Time to pull them & inspect. Here's what new looks like for the manifold:

    1988 OMC 4.3 2V - Leaking Manifolds

Here's mine when I was trial fitting all the parts. an easy way to install the manifolds is to take a bolt from the kit and go to the hardware store and buy 2 identical pitch but longer bolts. Cut the heads off and cut a slot in the stub. Thread one the first and last holes in the cyl head for...

    Popped through the intake.

Is that all from the intake gaskets? Mine blew the head gaskets 2 years after an overheat but it didn't look that bad, even though it was in salt water. Judging by the rust in the intake ports it is possible an intake valve could be hanging open. When I pulled out all the lifters the cam looked...

The things that have to be marine grade are head gaskets & core plugs & that’s only if you use raw water cooling.

Down pipe is part # 19 above. You can see all the components of the 2 piece system in this diagram. OMC & Volvo used this basically identical system. Some parts you won’t need with a pre Vortec V6 (pre 1996) are the one way check valves (part # 5) that are screwed into the exhaust elbows; these...

Marine Carpet Glue For Wood Decking

Yes that can work if you have the ability to get the boat inside so it dries out. Outside even under a good cover it will stay damp at least in this climate. No one around here had barns or garages big enough for boats. It’s just how it is.

Very easy to remove those nuts. To pull the manifolds you have to spray silicone spray on the Y pipe & slide the bottom hoses down over the Y pipe. Might have to shove a thin screwdriver under the rubber & heat it a bit with a heat gun to get ‘em loose they kinda get baked on…. The down pipe is...

Marine Carpet Glue For Wood Decking

What’s your climate? Here a wood deck built off your house even if made of cedar lasts like 15 years most of it if not all will need to be replaced. Seaside area more or less constant moisture . That, termite’s & carpenter ants love the moisture. I don’t trailer miles to use the boat it’s is...
