And you can buy a Holley Marine 2 bbl carb brand new; better than remanufactured which is what you’ll get from Flying Fish Carbs. Yeah new costs more…. 0-80320-1 I believe is the # of the Holley 2 bbl calibrated for the 302 cu in Ford.

Well... there used to be an excellent anti fouling paint for aluminum (TBT) that was outlawed about 15 years ago...except...for government use....those alu Coast Guard boats can use it....the rest of us, have to deal with Trilux II on the outdrive which is fair but not great. So we don't all...

What do I check next on overheating issue?

This varies by engine & cooling system design but I have found that the area right under the thermostat housing reads the closest to the temp gauge, usually about 15 or so degrees less than the gauge. My engine has a 160 stat and it runs from a little under 160 to at most 175 after coming off...

What do I check next on overheating issue?

If you're overheating when idling & at higher speeds but not at moderate revs, that points to low raw water flow, if you have a new impeller, did you change the housing and wear plate as well? The housing ususally doesn't need to be replaced unless the plastic was distorted from a bad overheat...

5.7 Vortec dist, trying to seal the cap/rotor due to constant corrosion. Merc 350 Mag MPI Horizon.

Ah ok that explains it. Salt water is tough on inboards due to the materials used. Too bad you can’t keep it out of the bilge and have it exit overboard via scuppers. If your boat does have scuppers maybe you can build a dam to force it to divert around the engine bilge & out the scuppers. I’d...

5.7 Vortec dist, trying to seal the cap/rotor due to constant corrosion. Merc 350 Mag MPI Horizon.

You should not be getting salt water in the bilge only fresh water from rain. If salt water is getting in around the transom mount somehow that’s going to cause a lot of other corrosion damage.

4.3 dying when putting it in gear

If yours is stalling going into gear, then the engine is not taking the load from the turning the driveshaft, that's more likely to be an ignition/carburation issue. Unless, due to some other adjustment issue, your interrupt is engaging when it shouldn't. I'm not familiar with the Merc sytem so...

5.7 Vortec dist, trying to seal the cap/rotor due to constant corrosion. Merc 350 Mag MPI Horizon.

Mine have a screen in the bottom, and same unit was used on Merc 4.3s, I have 2 spares one painted OMC grey and the other Merc black.

4.3 dying when putting it in gear

When this happens it’s because the interrupter is triggered for longer than it should be. It’s really just a split second when you are pulling the remote control from in-gear to neutral. The Merc system momentarily shorts the ignition to ground so if the interrupter stays engaged too long it...

5.7 Vortec dist, trying to seal the cap/rotor due to constant corrosion. Merc 350 Mag MPI Horizon.

My OMC/BRP original Prestolite caps & even Sierra aftermarket caps come with gaskets. Not sure why Merc doesn’t use one… That said I can get thru a season with my boat on a salt water mooring & it will show very little green corrosion after 6 months out there that can easily be cleaned off.

    Lower unit oil

And you don't have to get em that tight, you're just making a seal, not bolting on a truck tire lol. Snug and a tiny bit more. Get a bright flashlight and look in the recess where the seal goes make sure there's no grit in there to keep it from sealing. I use a bit of compressed air before...

Most marine carbs have J tubes for the bowl vents and the nipple on the air horn or carb body for the mechancial pump overflow. Rochester Q-Jets don't have a J tube but the tube is cut in such a way to keep gas overflow from running out of the carb, it is facing the venturis. in this pic you...

    Ford 302 pinging

yep but are you sure that it is a marine carb? Do you have a mechanical fuel pump? If so is there a yellow tygon hose running from the overflow nipple on the pump to a nipple on the air horn of the carb, or carb body? If not, then it is probably not a marine carb. See it in this pic? that's the...

    Ford 302 pinging

with the alu anti siphon valve I had a problem restricting fuel flow, the engine would start and idle fine and rev up in neutral but wouldn't pull the boat up on plane. My mechanic replaced it with a brass one back in 2004 haven't had a problem since. I would not eliminate the anti siphon with a...

That looks like it might have been a hot air choke instead of the well type choke common on Rochesters, there was a little piston inside that under vacuum pulled the choke plate open after the engine starts. https://www.carburetor-parts.com/rochester-2-jet-choke-system looky here. was it...

    Lower unit oil

I’ve been using those for years on my Cobra they are much easier to deal with than the old slot style. The hex head Allen style won’t strip as long as you use the right size….keep in mind there are US size Allen fittings and Metric… Also ALWAYS replace those white fiber sealing gaskets! They get...

    3.8 OMC replacement motors?

The decision of what to do all depends on how long you intend to keep the boat. If just a few years start searching for the older style GM V6 that used a 2 piece main seal that will work with your drive system. However if keeping it indefinitely rebuilding the transom to take a late model Merc...
