    Quick confirm: oil mix

Not "necessary" as any TC-W3 is sufficient BUT use whatever you're confirmable with (including the mix ratio)

overheating - looking for a cause

You may of (inadvertently) not insert the pick-up tube into the water pump housing? Just drop the LU slightly and see if the tube is lined up with the pump Does it have a tell-tail?

    Quick confirm: oil mix

50:1 is the mix ratio When you finish the jug synblend just switch to TC-W3 oil from wallymart or pick one (lol); There are roughly 600 blends certified by NMMA as TCW3 compliant. The only thing guaranteed to be unique about these blends is the NMMA certification/registration number assigned to...

    lower unit swap from a 85hp to a 125hp

Is that because they became Mercs. gear-assemblies?

    50HP Mercury Thunderbolt Stalling

Welcome to IBoats 1. Verify if the engine is running on all Cylinders, by pulling the cable off the spark-plug & listen for RPM drop on that cylinder (no drop = no fire) 2. Inspect/Replace the fuel-pump if not done already What is the year/serial number of the motor? What are the compression...

Not a "stupid" question but "loaded" question. lol

    Famous shift shaft

Most if not all Mercs. had some type of "guide" to keep the upper shift-shaft in place for that purpose (they tend to fall out, once the LU has been removed)

    Famous shift shaft

I'm not sure what pictures you're talking about. This the procedure; Turn the LU shift shaft by hand counter-clockwise until it stops, then with Vise Grips tight on the bottom of the shaft turn it a few more degrees CCW until it clicks into a stop, this should be neutral - check by turning...

Force 85 really difficult to start

We actually have one in our shop (at work) that's why I recognize the cards. It got used on the Diesel engines (never actually used it myself) I'm not sure how old?? maybe '70s (the pic is from Flea bay)

    early 70s Mercury 500 50hp ignition question

In the pictures provided; yours is pre '73 after that it went to individual coils & and a different switch-box (still belt driven) In '75 or '76 it went to a Stator & Trigger assembly under the Flywheel They were good solid motors accept setting the max spark-advance etc. is a hassle. (don't...

Yeah..better save than sorry, especially if the experts have warned us Good call!!

Force 85 really difficult to start

7 Bar = 101.5 PSI The compression reading is not "great" and judging by the compression-tester having (still) a card read-out means it's most likely accurate; the good part is that all readings are close together.

Force 85 really difficult to start

    what is the question?
