115 Johnson v4 2000 trouble staying started oil/gas leak from exhaust

OK, Racerone, if either of the OMS pump diaphragm fails, does the fuel leak into the crankcase? I would think it does, however I am not an expert. The OMS pump and the Vapor pump are powered by the crankcase pulses, so what protects the crankcase from the raw fuel, if the diaphragm fails...

1990 90HP Pontoon, 4300 RPM at WOT, Do I need a new prop?

A 15" prop would, in theory, give you 400 more RPM which gets you into the max RPM range, which is good. Will that give you higher speed, who knows? Pontoon boats are not built for speed. There are some pontoons with really high HP and go 60MPH, but those are specialty and stupid (IMO)...

flip Penta SX-A to counter rotation

Most counter rotating gearcases have a better bearing on the rear gear to allow for full speed running. I doubt you can switch them with the shift rod. You should check SEI. They sell new gearcases of both types.

    VRO Failure & Life Expectancy

I still have the original OMS pump on my '98 Johnny 150HPV6. I do carry a gal of 2 cycle oil with me at all times. Should the OMS fail, I can dump the correct amount of oil (or thereabouts) to make a 50::1 fuel mix in the 63Gal fuel tank. I would need to spend some time rocking the boat to...

    Trailer Light Adapter Question

Not all trailers are wired that way. Some have the 4 wires in the connector, and run the running lights to one taillight and then the other. What you have is a bit better in corrosive environments, as it has one less bare connection to get dirty.

    Trailer bearing frustration

Let's be clear. The grease seal keeps grease in the hub, and the bearing clean and dry. The bearings and races keep the hub on the axle. If you mess up the seal, the bearings can get wet or dirty. It could cause some wear on them, but you will be safe towing it, at least for a while. If...

115 Johnson v4 2000 trouble staying started oil/gas leak from exhaust

You can replace the OMS pump, but it is a $500 part. Rebuild kits are avail at the maxrules site, for less. The vapor pump may be rebuilt for a few $. However, I would recommend you find out what the issue is before pulling out your checkbook.

Wiring harness schematic for a TJ40ELETB.

See what the maxrules web site has. Generally, if you find a wiring diagram of a motor of about the same year, it will be close enough. Wiring colors are pretty standard for motors after the 80's. Johnnyrude transitioned from a single big red plug (the 80's and early 90's) to several Deutch...

    1988 100hp mercury spark plugs

A lot of 2 cycle motors use the crankcase pulses to drive the fuel pump. If the fuel pump diaphragm leaks, raw fuel gets into the crankcase, and eventually thru the cylinder out the exhaust port.

115 Johnson v4 2000 trouble staying started oil/gas leak from exhaust

Your fuel pump is vacuum operated. If the fuel pump diaphragm leaks, raw fuel gets into the crankcase, fouling the spark plugs, and eventually escaping into the water. Mix up some 50::1 fuel mix, disconnect the fuel linns from the fuel pump (OMS Pump) and using the primer bulb keep the carbs...

NGK BUHW is the equivalent of the Champion L76V plugs.

115 Johnson v4 2000 trouble staying started oil/gas leak from exhaust

At least suck a qt off the bottom of the oil tank into a clear container. Water can build up in the oil tank as a result of condensation, so it is wise to do that anyway. You are referring to the oil drops on the carb throats in picture 1? That doesn't look abnormal. White smoke is usually...

    1988 100hp mercury spark plugs

The Crowleymarine site lists 4 spark plugs Champ L76V which is a surface gap plug, NGK BUZHW (NLA), also surface gap, NGK BP8HN-10 and NGK BPZ8HN (NLA) likely conventional plugs. So it looks like you have a choice of the Champion surface gap plug or an NGK Traditional plug. The L76V plug...

Overheating at idle, cool as a cucumber at speed

A kink in the telltale hose should not cause an overheat issue, as it is not (or should not be) the only outlet for water going thru the thermostat. I would pull the thermostat cover and make sure the passage that goes to the exhaust cover is not blocked, and the exhaust cover has flow out the...

Re power - 2 cylinder vs 3 cylinder Johnson 50hp

The 3 cylinder motor should run smoother and should weigh a bit more. However, in my experience, a lot of shops recommend the motor they make the most $$ on.

Twin Merc V8 and different fuel usage

Sometimes one engine has different stuff than the other. i.e. one engine has the power steering pump and system, so It will use more fuel. Do you have an engine synchronizer?

    Fuel Tank Sensor

It is best is you can get a sender made for your fuel tank. Second choice is a universal sender that can be cut to work with your fuel tank. Senders usually have a black ground wire and a pink sender wire. Check the fuel pickup fitting. On my Seaswirl it was galvanized steel and rotted out.

Help! I need to know what I got!!! Lol

OK A question for a powerplant. What was the performance of a 455 Olds with a Berkeley jet in the 80s. I never heard about a win in any race. Of course, I have not followed the races. My Avenger, which was a typical boat built in Ca in the seventies and eighties can cruise at 60+MPH...
