    Cowl fiberglass resto

Gee, don't you want the outside to look the best? That is where the form needs to be IMO. The inside can be sanded to fit. It is not a precision fit. The Mechanical Engineers metalworking creed is "Hammer to shape, file to fit, paint to hide"! Fiberglass Engineers do it a bit differently...

Mariner 45hp Carburetor Leaking after Total Rebuild....stumped!

If you took your inlet needle to a Merc Dealer who owes you a favor, and looked thru his selection of new inlet needles and seats, and match the length, diameter and recess of a new inlet needle, maybe the seat would fit, after drill and tap. When I say recess, I mean the amount the inlet...

    Cowl fiberglass resto

Fairly easy fix. Mostly cometic. Originally the cowling was made in a Mold. You need to use something on the outside to mimic the Mold. Likely a piece of lath would work. Build up the cowling fron the inside, with a bit of fiberglass. Cloth or mat would work fine. Saturate with resin...

Mariner 45hp Carburetor Leaking after Total Rebuild....stumped!

If you get real desperate, you could drill out the old seat and thread for a new seat. You would need to find a precise replacement inlet needle and seat.

Poppet Valve Kit for 85 Mercury Black Max 150 hp V6

Did she overheat at engine speed below 2000RPM or above, or both? The poppit starts working at about 2000RPM, when water pressure is strong enough to open it. The thermostat cools the engine at about 2000RPM or less. Check them for proper operation. I get about 7 or 8 years on a set, in...

Help! I need to know what I got!!! Lol

Is it a jet drive inboard or does it need an engine? The Olds 455CID/Berkeley Jet combo was a popular motor back in that day. Obviously check it for rot, especially the deck. I have an Avenger from the mid-70s, which is pretty similar.

Prop Locking Question (Reverse Locking Cam?)

Gee, it has been a long time since I worked on that gearcase, but I seem to remember that I could not get the pinon gear off the shaft. I did remove the nut, but that was all I could manage. I seem to remember that I was able to get the forward gear out, even leaving the pinon gear installed.

Poppet Valve Kit for 85 Mercury Black Max 150 hp V6

Poppit valves changed a bit over the years. Therefore make sure you get one for you exact year motor. Looks like they changed the poppit design in 1986. Crowleymarine has all the parts, but I did not see a kit. You can probably order the poppit diaghram and the gaskets and be OK, unless...

    Controller box

Not sure, Sometimes the throttle only button comes off and there is a bolt under it. Sometimes there is s set screw somewhere on the base of the throttle handle. Definitely pull off the trim that covers the tilt/trim switch and see what is under it.

Prop Locking Question (Reverse Locking Cam?)

If you can get gears and dog at a low ebay price and they are good, and you have the knowledge to install and shim them, you have a chance. Most folks do not have that expertise. I would recommend you source a used gearcase, in case you need it.

Prop Locking Question (Reverse Locking Cam?)

The shift shaft coupler (female) should be pinned onto the upper shift shaft. The reverse lock cam should fit over the lower shift shaft. That is the usual gearcase in a 1973 Merc 850. If you have something else, you have another motor. I have lost the bubble on this. After you refilled the...

Tons of play in CC steering wheel...

Sure, hydraulic or cable steering? Hydraulic, I would imagine with that issue.

    Engine Will Not Turn Over

Bad power cables feeding both the starter solenoid and the ign switch. If you can jumper just the positive to the starter and she cranks, the ground is likely fine. Check the entire battery cable length with fingers looking for corrosion under the insulation.

    Fuel Tank Sensor

Hopefuly your boat has a hatch over the fuel gauge. If so, pop it off, and remove the 5 self taping screws, holding the sender in place. SeaSwirl boats often had a plastic tank, with screw threads moulded in. Be careful not to strip those. Some of those plastic tanks had galvanized...

2011 4.3 Alpha MerCruiser winterizing question

I like to use the antifreeze to push the residual water out of her block. As a test, after the block has drained and been blown out with air, dump some antifreeze into it and see if any more water comes out.

    Controller box

They will interchange, as long as you get a control that is compatible with Mercury outboards. The cold start lever works as well as the throttle only button.

2011 4.3 Alpha MerCruiser winterizing question

Gee, everyone focused on draining the block. Good stuff, but not complete. Your shop does a lot more stuff, or it should. Run motor on flusher. After warm, fog engine with Fogging Oil, and stop flushing. Pull all drain plugs to drain engine of water. Pull upper and lower drain plugs on...

    4.5 mercury 2 stroke

Smooth move. 10 Hp is a better choice. Also, consider a larger engine. The cost of a 15HP motor over a 10HP is small. However, I think the most important thing is that they use the same fuel. Otherwise, you always have the aux fuel tank kicking around. And how much fuel do you take for...

    Bad Transom?

Gee, does anyone have a judgement as to whether the transom was weakened. I have only exp. with f/g boats, but that dent/crease looks like an issue.
