can someone point me in the right direction?

Dave, A lot of motors have a trim limit switch, separate from the trim angle sender. Not sure if he has one. The crowleymarine site would tell the story.

Fuel setup two outboards, one tank.

Check valves in primer bulbs are usually worth about 2 cents. The check valves in the fuel pumps are much better. However, it could be that without shut off valves, one motor or the other will suck air from the other. Test is and see if the check valves are sufficient.

1976 chris craft lancer steering wheel removal advice.

That steering looks to be rack and pinon. If you only need access behind the dash, pull the bolts holding the rack to the pinon. The center part of the steering will still remain, but most of the wiring will be exposed.

    Gas

How tall is the tank? Short tanks only need a bit of bow raise, and a fuel pickup in the bow, to have the fuel pickup tube suck air. With a short tank, you will want the fuel pickup in the stern of the tank.

    Hot Mess

You also might see if the new mechanic has experience with the older motors, like yours. Maybe look for a mechanic in his 50s or 60s. A lot of shops will not work on motors older than 20 years. I presume you boat in freshwater.

    Mercury xr2 not turning over

Sure, start it on a flusher. Keep the engine speed to idle. After running it, smell any oil that you see. If it smells like gasoline or oil, it is fuel. If it stinks like rotten eggs, it is gear oil, and you likely have a leak. Mercs often leak at the waterpump base seal to the driveshaft...

    Four Winns hull strength

Yes, the SeaRay hull cracked once and deformed once. The center of the hull under the ski well deformed. I repaired that, from the inside, and some time later, the port strake cracked the long way. The fiberglass under the ski well formed the keel of the boat. When the ski well hatch was...

are these wires supposed to be connected to eachother?

Trace them out. The tan is usually overheat alarm sender and the brown/white may be for a temp gauge. Perhaps the PO removed the overheat sender and replaced it with a temp sensor?

Fuel setup two outboards, one tank.

One separator is fine. You need a selector valve to keep the fuel line in use, from sucking air, from the other motor.

can someone point me in the right direction?

Some motors never had a trim sender. Check the crowleymarine web site to see if your motor ever had one. BTW- trim senders are not all that accurate or reliable, which is what they should be. Replace the trim gauge with a water pressure gauge, which is much more important. Trim the boat by feel.

    solenoids?

Thye real question is does the trim work? If so, leave it alone. No one who knows the wiring of the solenoids will be fooled by it.

    Mercury xr2 not turning over

Your motor runs on a gasoline-oil mix. Some of the 2 cycle oil doesn't always burn. If you run the motor in a barrel, the water becomes an oily mess.

1979 Mercury 70 EL Thunderbolt Kill Switch Install

That is the switchbox, look for a yellow/black wire. That will be the ign killer wire. It needs to ground to kill the ignition.

Prop Locking Question (Reverse Locking Cam?)

Let's hope that the new gear oil fixes your shift issue. Otherwise, I fear the gearcase is bad. Inline 4 cylinder motors have a lower gear ratio than IL 6 cylinders motors. I think (not shared by all) that a 2" drop in pitch makes them compatible.

    Non conventional issues.

Gee, I don't believe it. My '93 Merc 135V6 has lost it's plugs for the airbox. I duct taped to seal it, however, I cannot believe it make any difference. I expect it keeps the water out of the carbs. if it got there somehow. However, the cowling does that real well. I think you are...

    Four Winns hull strength

Your hull should never crack. They can take a real pounding, and they do not leak much. Hulls are made to compliment the powerplant and real world conditions, and also, because the lawyers would get big settlements if they fail. It is real cheap to put another layer of glass or two, down...

Check the battery cables, their entire length, with your fingers. Look for corrosion under the insulation.

That is often called an airbox.

NO SPARK 1988 mercury 100HP outboard Sea Ray seville

If your rectifier is shorted to ground, it can hinder the spark. You might disconnect the yellow wires from the rectifier and insulate them. Repeat the spark test.

When you say intake, do you mean crankcase cover or something else?
