    1983 Mercruiser Sterndrive - R

I don't think you could have screwed anything up, but it should turn the prop shaft unless you're in neutral. You tried moving the shift lever fwd/reverse and turning the input shaft, right?

    Motor swaps

Your heads will fit a pre vortec, exhaust manifolds are the same and will fit a vortec long block

    Motor swaps

Yes, you can swap an auto block, swap over your accessories, change head gasket and core plugs and call it a day. You'd need the same vintage block (non balance shaft, pre vortec--i think the cutoff would be pre-1992). Or you could upgrade to a balance shaft vortec engine, doable but more work...

    Newbie Twin motor question

Unclear if you're asking about the motor, or the whole package. As bondo said, the engines will be the same but the outdrives will be counter rotating.

    Back again

I was thinking that the OB might command a huge premium over the I/O, but it doesn't appear that that's the case anymore. Quick search showed 2021 200hp yamaha for $10k, that's maybe a couple more than a new I/O (but maybe not even for a bobtail). If it's time to repower it's easier to find a...

    Whats my old motor worth??

Rebuildable 5L shortblock isn't worth much. You can make a lot more parting it out, check ebay for prices and either list it for a little less or put it out for the same price locally. If you just want to unload it, my WAG would be $400-500 on CL.

    What am I missing here?

Thanks, that's what I'm thinking. That void is strange though, I have a few other props that don't have it. It's always worked fine. Nothing on there is seized including the thrust washer. Marine grease is your friend.

    Fired up today...

Just looking at the manual, it appears that the points ignition used on the 4.3 has 12' base and 32' total advance, so that's odd.

    What am I missing here?

I knocked out the center splined hub. The plastic piece appears to be in there still. Appears to me that these are the pieces in the pics above, no?

    Fired up today...

4.3/tb iv. Initial timing should be 8, it was 5-6. Full advance at 2500 rpm should be about 20-23'. I'll check total advance when I get on the water, promise.

    Mercruiser exhaust systems.

Ok, can see them now after coming back. Makes a lot more sense with the pics!

Alpha 1 Gen 2 Drive Oil Leak

I use a rubber stopper. My understanding is that the upper can't be tested separate on a gen 2 though?

    What am I missing here?

Hmm. The thrust washer is on the drive, not in my pic. I don't see how that black piece would fit in the void. What I have in there actually looks like @Yegboats pic, but it doesn't go the full length of the prop. Lemme take a shot from the rear, might help. So I guess the real question is, any...

    4.3 Mercruiser cold start issues

This is only applicable to electric fuel pumps...if you have a mechanical pump there isn't an oil pressure switch.

If you just have a long block, what's driving the ignition and injectors? You don't need the ECU?

    What am I missing here?

Yeah, the thrust washer is there. I mean, the splines are there, so presumably there is some sort of hub in there. I just don't know if there should be that void there. I haven't seen a part that would fill it--it would be kind of 4 sided and conical.

    What am I missing here?

Swapped outdrives and went to swap the props. Took off the old one, which looked like the pic below. It's a standard quicksilver aluminum prop. God knows how long I've been running it like this with apparently no issues, but it struck me that there maybe should probably be more of a hub back...

    1983 Mercruiser Sterndrive - R

You won't be able to pump diesel in from the bottom. Either through the top, or pour in from the top cover. I know people do it, but man I'd be nervous running a solvent on my bearings. I certainly wouldn't give it any throttle. Fwd/reverse probably doesn't matter much, everything but the prop...
