    Proper Engine Oil Level

Too much is *not* better than too little (at least it isn't good). You're more likely to do damage running a qt high than rubbing a qt low (though you're probably fine either way)

Replace or Repair, where to start?

Look into the upper from the bottom, it's the plastic piece where the copper pipe fits in.

Merc 4.3l timing question, BTDC mark

Yeah, he didn't specify. Just so he knows he may or may not need base mode.

Replace or Repair, where to start?

Before you put it back together, check out the water pocket cover in the upper. With that overheat it may be melted as well.

No base timing mode on a TB 4

Lower gear oil on Alpha One holes sealed

Those o-rings are $0.50 a pair and available everywhere, so... Maybe the threads are buggered from trying to drill out old plugs. Regardless, if that was the solution, I'd go through the rest of the boat *very* carefully.

Lower gear oil on Alpha One holes sealed

Wtaf is going on there? I guess I'd scrape it off and see what's underneath, but damn.

    1986 Mercruiser 470 Starter & Fuel Pump

Blocks the same, flywheels the same. Only difference that I know of is that the later engines used a slave solenoid. No gotchas that I'm aware of

    1986 Mercruiser 470 Starter & Fuel Pump

Looks like the starters on eBay have pretty wide applications. I went with an el cheapo in 2012 that was still working in 2019. Imo unless you're going for an oem/brand name starter you have no idea what you're getting. Worth it to me for ¼ the cost, starter is easy enough to get to. They make...

    Osco risers for 470 motors

The reservoirs for the cast and aluminum manifolds have different Merc part numbers. They also have different manifold to reservoir gaskets, so I'd guess they aren't interchangeable.

    3.0 LX cooling system

You should check your drive alignment, grease and check your gimbel bearing, coupler, and ujoints while you're in there. Maybe sure your bellows are in good shape and that your shift cable moves smoothly. Never inspect the impeller, just replace it. On a new to you, I'd order the whole impeller...

1992 Mercruiser 4.3 Alpha One Gen II has water in oil after rebuild.

Hearing air coming out is just fine as long as the cylinder isn't at tdc on the compression stroke...

4.3 mercruiser water in oil! Am i paranoid?

You'll want to start your own thread instead of tacking on to this one. (But no, doesn't have to be at TDC). @GA_Boater

    485 mercruiser

There are a couple of other differences, not sure what year you have, but the older ones have cast exhaust manifolds (instead of aluminum) and a different coolant reservoir, a 3" heat exchanger, different wiring for the starter (no slave solenoid).

350/5.7 Exhaust valve seal leak + low compression

Either way, the seal wouldn't affect compression. That means your valve isn't seating correctly for whatever reason. As AD said, that would be valve, guide, or seat.

1992 Mercruiser 4.3 Alpha One Gen II has water in oil after rebuild.

Can't picture what you're talking about with the intake, but if your intake manifold is leaking, then yes, that could be a source of water. Doesn't sound like you're doing much with your pressure testing. Are you just filling the cylinder with compressed air? If you're not at TDC on the...

1992 Mercruiser 4.3 Alpha One Gen II has water in oil after rebuild.

Valve stem seals shouldn't do it. Didn't you replace all of the gaskets already? How about intake/exhaust manifold and risers? A compression test would tell you if something went really wrong with your rebuild, but best bang for the buck would probably be to pressure test the coolant system.

    1989 3.7L 224/165H

Could a bad HX do that? coolant can leak to the raw water side, but it would take increased pressure in the freshwater side to flow out the overflow tank. You should pressure test the system, but it could still hold pressure with a bad head gasket. Did you pressure test the radiator cap? That...

    Starboard engine drain/4.3L

Also got nervous about leaving that intake manifold drain in there. Pulled it again, and once again didn't get a drop of water out. There was a lot of space behind the drain; I can't imagine it holding enough water in there to crack anything. I think I leave it in next year.
