Big day for 4.3 LX, full tune, compression, intermittent start problem solved and new thermostat.

Post a pic. Yes, holes drilled into the transom and stringers. Don't take off just the lower unit. Easier to take off the whole outdrive and split to replace, and allows you to check out the inside of bellows, u-joints, bellows, etc. It weighs about 80# I believe. I have a stand that I built...

    Forum update

2 issues: 1. Clicking on photos on a phone (mine at least using 2 browsers) results in a super zoom that you can't move around. Opening the image in a new tab is a work around. 2. Unable to see who made the last post in a thread (on phone again). Same issue for a long time with VB. Browsing in...

Big day for 4.3 LX, full tune, compression, intermittent start problem solved and new thermostat.

I have a similar setup now. I didn't bother putting another filter on there; if it makes it past the canister, it will probably make it through the other filters also. Merc recommends running the carb dry for storage. If you dig into the carb at all, let us know your jetting and metering...

    4.3 EFI drainage ports

What is that referring to? Hose going to water pump?

    Winterizing Mercruiser 4.3 question

When did this start? Manual #7 doesn't mention it, #18 and 25 "recommend" it. @Maverick7 , removing all the drains and hoses will drain the block and manifolds completely. If adding a/f, Merc recommends removing the thermostat and adding through the tstat housing.

    Lost all my oil...again

Yeah, except "Took top off carb, verified float settings. No crap in there, needle valves/seats looked good. Sealed well when upside down and I tried to blow into the intake." Like I said, strange to do this at the exact moment I dump my oil. Oh well, I'll take it. Also I found it a bit strange...

    Lost all my oil...again

Well, verified that the carb was flooding. It fixed itself though, and then everything magically started working, idle smoothed out, vacuum increased, missing stopped. Must have had more gas going in there than I appreciated. Not sure why it keeps intermittently flooding though, and the timing...

    Gear Oil in UJoint Bellows

Not too difficult, especially if you don't need to set rolling torque on the bearings. Not sure which drive you have. Either way it's definitive doable. You just need to make sure that all the shims you take out go back in and set the bearing preload correctly.

Antifreeze low after sitting 2 week

27-18272 is the gasket, use the Merc graphite gasket, not the green paper. Drain the system and pressure test. Did you check the heat exchanger?

    1996 4.3 Mercruiser idle sputter

Are you pressurizing a cylinder and then reading the pressure after time, or actually using a leakdown tester? Your numbers should be in %, not psi.

    1996 4.3 Mercruiser idle sputter

Your leakdown numbers are horrible. You are losing a ton of compression somewhere. With those numbers surprised it's running at all. Did you do a wet compression test? If you pressurize a cylinder can you tell where it's leaking (by hearing air escape)?

Mercruiser 470 raw water in oil

No, you can have a hg failure that doesn't affect the coolant jacket, or the failure won't show up at 15 psi.

    Lost all my oil...again

Ok, I was able to eliminate the 45' and use original nipple, and then a tee on top. That should eliminate a lot of the leverage on the fitting. Also put the switch directly above, so again, less weight against the straight section. Straight section is also now 1.5" v. 2". Lastly, that brass...

    Lost all my oil...again

Went about 25 miles today. Last mile or so, I noticed that the oil pressure was hovering/bouncing a bit at 50 psi (usually it's 60 at the speed I was going). I was keeping an eye on it, and then it dropped to zero while doing 3k-ish rpm. I immediately (?) shut down. Unlike last time, the carb...

    Running lean after engine swap

I was planning on swapping in the stock rods on the water, but didn't have the torx bits in toolbox #3 🙄 So used the .065x047 rods as before. I pulled plugs after 12 miles of running mostly at 35 mph. My tach is off (going to leave details in my swap thread) so not sure of rpms but it ran great...

Water in outdrive, pressure tests OK?

Went about 40-50 miles last weekend for the first trip of the year, and the boat sat on a mooring for 4 days. Pulled the plug after I hauled it out, and had milky gear oil. A1G1 outdrive. I had pressure tested the drive prior to putting it on (both halves independently, and then when assembled)...

    Running lean after engine swap

Finally splashed my 3.7L --> 4.3L swap today. A few issues remain, but the biggest is that I'm running lean. Seems to run fine up until about 2500 RPM, but starts surging after that and eventually starts backfiring if I push it. Doesn't matter if I ramp up slow or fast. Interestingly, it gets on...

    Nola Mike's 3.7/470 --> 4.3L swap thread

Alright! Splashed! About 5-10 miles of driving. , Alternator still funny. Initially wasn't charging, then started overcharging, then settled in. Stayed where it was supposed to rest of the time. Temp was rock solid at 140-150 on my gauge the whole time, except when I did my plug chop and saw...

    Y pipe exhaust boot direction?

Just realized that the lower exhaust boot connecting the elbow to the y pipe has a slight bend in it that I didn't notice on install. I can't figure out which way it's supposed to bend. Any thoughts?
