    Harness issues

If your 850 has the quick disconnect plug on the starboard side of the cowl base, it is not plug and play. Mechanically it will work fine. The separate brown wire is overheat, which you likely do not have. If you have a 1976 or newer Merc 850, you will need to replace the engine harness...

    Harness issues

Your old 850 boat harness includes the battery cables. A newer harness will not. Hence you will need separate battery cables, plus the new harness. Of course you could buy new controls and harness and cut off the skinny plug and graft the old quick connect to the new wires. Usually, those...

    Harness issues

Is your motor ADI ignition with 4 coils? If so, you should be able to get an ADI ignition motor harness with the round skinny plug, for a more modern 4 cylinder ADI motor, say a '90s 115HP. This engine harness plug will match the newer controls wiring harness. You would need to route the...

    Harness issues

What exactly is the issue? Newer controls will work the shift and throttle properly. Your wiring can be adapted to the new wiring. You would need an interconnection diagram. Not too difficult

    Rectifier/Regulator

Earlier Mercs had a singular 40Amp VR. Later Mercs had twin 20A VR what do you have?

    98 Johnson leaking hydraulic fluid.

You can buy a new reservoir, cap, orings and screws for about $80. I just replaced my cap as it tended to cross thread. The new one ($20) works like new.

    Lower unit oil

Gee, I use a hand impact driver. They come with various widths of slotted screw driver bits. If you use the impact driver correctly, the plugs do not strip.

    40hp mercury exhaust leak

My '93 Merc V6 has a rubber hose from the block to the cowling for the idle exhaust relief. If this hose leaks, exhaust gets under the cowling. Do you have something similar?

    Lower unit oil

Coated paper gearcase gaskets are the right ones for most applications. The nylon can be too hard to seal well. I never seriously tried the oring ones. You need to dig the remains of the paper ones out of the gearcase when changing the oil, as multiple partial gaskets can leak. Amazon and...

    Bumps in Gelcoat - blistering?

Let it go until the spring. They may dry out. I get those in the cockpit, when it is covered by a wet cushion. They dry out after a while I would still recommend the barrier coating. I did 3 coats of pettit epoxy barrier coat. You mix it(50:50) roll it on and recoat after the time...

    Glastron SX 175 Gas Smell

Try the gasket dry. If she leaks, put the dressing on it. The dressing is a non-hardening, fuel resistant substance. Seals real well.

    Glastron SX 175 Gas Smell

"Permatex gasket dressing and sealant" is fuel resistant. I have used it to seal the sender gasket, with good results. Coat both sides of the rubber gasket and tighten the clamp screws. If in doubt, replace the gasket with new.

    Check engine alarm

Your motor will have the high speed jets in the carb bowls, behind the brass plug. I have heard they are hard to get. You might try a salvage yard or flea bay.

Change prop or leave as is

1 inch of pitch will in theory get you to max RPM. However, adding load, say a cooler will negate that RPM. I think you are at max performance.

1990 90 hp Mercury. Beeping when key turned on.

What does the owners manual (internet) say the beeping is? Probably an oil injection issue. That motor usually comes with just the engine oil reservoir. Is the float level sensor working? I believe it should ground when oil is low. A steady tone is overheat. Obviously you should premix...

    1977 Baja on the cheap

That motor has a lousy prop on it. Unusual for a performance boat. I cannot tell if it has power trim. If not, it will not be a performance boat. Is the floor soft? If so, that indicates it needs replacement, and perhaps the stringers as well. Also check the transom for delamination and...

    Yep, it's that time! :-(

It used to take me all day (short days in December) to pull the boat and winterize my MerCruiser 4.3LX. With my OB motor, I can be on that scotch by noon!

Gear oil for 15 hp Evinrude outboard

Gee, put the gear oil in the kitchen before you try to change that. Wifey will like that a lot.

    Yep, it's that time! :-(

Gee, clean the spark arrestor, grease the zerk fittings, spray the engine block with corrosion guard, change the engine oil and filter, change the water separator, grease the steering rod, pull the prop and clean the propshaft, remove the barnacles. I miss anything?
