    1974 Mercury Remote Needed

You can get a new control with a wiring harness and new ign keyswitch on the web for less than $150. You would then need to adapt the wiring. Alternatively you could get a old remote off fleabay or someplace and stick your ign keyswitch and control cables into it. Those MerControls are real...

Mercury 150 not performing well under load and drinking gas.

The fuel pump is connected to the crankcase. As the pistons move up and down, pressure and vacuum from the crankcase is directed to the fuel pump diaghram, which causes it to move in/out. On the other side of the diaghram is the fuel, and some one way valves. As the diaghram moves, fuel is...

1996 115 Johnson Ocean Runner V4 Will Not Idle J115SLEDR

You did swap your main jets to the new bowls? After you clean the throttle bodies idle passages. You can remove the side cover to do so. Set the idle mixture screws to 5-3/4 turns open.

    1974 Mercury Remote Needed

I would expect any Merc remote control would work, mechanically. I ran my '77 MerControl on my '93 Merc w/o issue, after I grafted the electrical. Your '74 likely has the quick disconnect wiring on the exterior of the motor. If the boat harness is good, it could be grafted to a newer control...

Mercury 150 not performing well under load and drinking gas.

Check the fuel pump diaphragm. If they leak, a large amount of fuel just leaks into the water, and can foul the spark plugs. After you check compression and spark plug color to make sure she runs on all 6, you may need to richen the carb idle mixture screws (if you have such) so she runs a bit...

1996 115 Johnson Ocean Runner V4 Will Not Idle J115SLEDR

The carb has a plate on it's side. That covers the calibration pocket. Carbs also have intermediate air bleed orafice. You probably already cleaned those, right? Also check the carb bowls for warp. Just put a strait edge on the mating surface. They often warp. The spaghetti seals between...

    Speedometer flooded with water

Likely the brass tube that flexes to move the needle has a leak. Probably need to be replaced. Anyway, try to dump out as much water as possible, and put it near an incandescent light bulb to dry it out.

    Working in colder weather

When working in colder temp, I tossed a blanket or two over the whole boat and stuck a small, save electric heater under the blanket. Direct sunlight also causes good hardening.

    Fixing Another DIYers Bass Boat

If it is all solid, fill the voids with poly putty or chopped glass and resin, and cover with cloth. Fill the weave of the cloth with resin and install new carpet.

    Working in colder weather

Polyester resin is flammable, and those heat guns can glow red hot, so be careful.

    Are Mercury 2cyl 2 strokes rubbish vs 3cyl 2strokes? (2008 40hp, boat package deal)

2 cylinder 2 cycle OB motors have been around forever. Think about the big twin motors from Johnnyrude. They were excellent. I expect the Merc is just as good. Whereas 2 cycle triples with 3 carbs are great, I would not let the lack of the third cylinder on a 40HP engine kill the deal. IMO

    Identify My Mercury

That silver disk with the 0G.... on it is the serial number. That will give you the year if you look on the maxrules site. The Mercury site will give you the HP as well as the year.

What type of hydraulic fluid to use in '98 50hp Johnson? Replace relays too while I'm at it?

If PTT runs slow, suspect dirty electrical connections. Pull relays and look at connectors. If they are corroded, so are their wiring harness connectors.

Picture of my prop - what’s going on here?

Normally Mercury prop hubs have longer splines set nearly all the way to the base of the prop. That hub looks more like a Johnnyrude one. Johnnyrude splines are shorter in length, so they do not go toward the gearcase as far. I would tap it out of the prop housing and see if you can find a...

    88 mercury 80hp 3 cylinder not charging

Gee, you can always disconnect the stator rom the rectifier and start the engine and put a voltmeter on the stator wires. Look for ac voltage. Stators were always tougher than rectifiers. in my experience.

    steering hydro-locking?

It shouldn't do that. Remove the large nut on the steering cable-to-tilt tube and move the steering wheel. See what comes out or if there is rust, dirt etc. If is never a bad idea to clean and grease the steering cable end in the tilt tube. Steering cable ends are made with 2 layers of...

    Ideas for refinishing boat bottom

If you want a nice looking bottom, you need to sand, fill and sand smooth the gouges, open weave and other stuff. You can then apply gel coat or even topside paint, as she is a trailered boat.
