    Power Tilt/Trim Installation - Late 70's Mercury 90HP

If I remember correctly, the PTT brackets bolt to the upper shock mounts. 1/2" fine thread stainless bolts are used. It looks kinds funny, as the bolt seems out of place, in the middle of the brackets. There was also a lower long thin bolt that held the bottom of the trim brackets as well...

    115 mercury carb problems

With leaking crankshaft seals, he would get water in the lower two cylinders, and they usually do not fire. Water will manifest as droplets on spark plugs. Maybe a leaky crankcase cover? Loose endcap bolts?

    Fuel Filter??

Gee, I replaced the ign module in an '88 MerCruiser, and it was plug and play. The only issue was that I needed to pull the rotor shaft out of the distributor to replace the module, which meant pulling the distributor. I had not done that kind of work since high school shop. It took me 2...

Gee, what happened to the carb Johnny 150HPV6 you had?

    CROSSFLOW PERFORMANCE ?'s

Sounds like some kind of loose electrical wire. I am not familiar with your motor's ign system, so I cannot provide any specifics. Most ign systems ground to kill spark. Maybe a loose wire grounded your ign?

Is there a combo Tach and Depth finder?

My Teleflex tachometer looks to be failing. I would prefer to add a depth finder function to my boat, but only use the standard 3" hole in the dash, for the tach. Anyone know of such a beastie?

1979 alpha drive lower shift cable

You might post this in the MerCruiser forum. I did that job only once, and followed the manual precisely. There may be shortcuts.

    1979 115 hp 6 cyl inline 2 cycle timing/carb adjust

Idle pickup timing on your ADI motor should be 0-9* ATDC. Did you set the timing pointer?

    1979 115 hp 6 cyl inline 2 cycle timing/carb adjust

Curtiss, Small engine mechanics will not help you with your thoroughbred motor. And your motor is a thoroughbred. Get the manual and follow it exactly, or you will not have a motor.

1985 157 Forester Phantom Sport steering assembly

I would expect a standard rack and pinon steering system will replace that. You may need to modify the cutout in the dash, as the new rack may not be compatible with your pinon or housing. Just so you know, steering system OEMs seem to want to phase out selling replacement cables. They want...

    1979 115 hp 6 cyl inline 2 cycle timing/carb adjust

The Mercury 115HP inline 6 was one of the most popular and successful motors ever built. The last one was built in 1988. You clearly need the service manual for it, as it has specific link and synch procedures, and does not usually act as you have described. Once you get the carbs clean and...

    Store under tarp ?

    As long as the tarp keeps the water out and is not sealed, it should be fine. Alternatively, can you flip the dingy over? If so, no tarp necessary.;

I'm just about ready to sink it.

Also, when you removed the powerhead, the shift lever could have lifted enough to separate the splines. They are only held down by the shift slide and linkage. If the shift slide rubber was stuck in the shift slider, the slider is bolted to the powerhead and could have pulled it up.

    1979 115 hp 6 cyl inline 2 cycle timing/carb adjust

I think 1979 was the changeover from distributor ignition with 1 coil to Alternator Driven Ignition (ADI) with 6 coils. Timing is unique to each type of ign. So what do you have? Did you replace carb gaskets, floats and inlet needle and seats, when cleaning them? If not, it is a real good...

I'm just about ready to sink it.

The shift arm under the carb should be facing port, when the shift slide is in the center of the slide track. That should be neutral. When the throttle handle is in neutral, the cable that is extended the most is the throttle cable. The shift cable will be about 1/2 extended. When you move...

Where to pass the fuel filling hose and vent fuel hose?

Most fuel pickups unscrew from the tank. I cannot tell from the photo whether your does. I had a vent that was pressed in, that I needed to swap with the fuel pickup, which was threaded. The vent fitting would rotate but not come out. I ended up drilling it out and threaded the collar to...

Where to pass the fuel filling hose and vent fuel hose?

From the original photo, I had though the fill and vent were in the rear of the tank. That makes them easy to route thru to the engine compartment. Cutting or notching a frame is much better than cutting or notching a stringer. However, the way the picture looks with the black lines, (fill...

    Ignition Fuse Pops, Weird Issue

What year MerCruiser? When you say cutout switch, do you mean shift assist switch on shift linkage?

Where to pass the fuel filling hose and vent fuel hose?

Scott says "running to the back will create a dip in the line and you will never get fuel in the tank". That is simply not true. Many boats (including mine) have that configuration. The fuel filler hose is wire reinforced, quite rigid and doesn't sag easily. I also do not recommend cutting...

    Upgrading, or downgrading?

Gee, go to a boat show and walk around in a 21 foot outboard model and then a 21 foot sterndrive model. Do you really want to trade a roomy interior of the OB model for a cramped cockpit, and the extra 700 pounds of weight of the sterndrive, to get a full swim platform? Sterndrives also...
