Oil in gas/water in cylinders 94 Volvo Penta 4.3

got my cyl heads from a local machine shop, $275 each. Fel Pro marine gasket set ARP cyl head bolts for small block Chevrolet the old ones will be real rusty from raw water cooling, I could not get the bolts out even with a long 1/2" drive ratchet, so used my 1/2" De Walt electric impact gun the...

Oil in gas/water in cylinders 94 Volvo Penta 4.3

better check first to see if that old system is leaking water back into the center exhaust passage....or else....can hydro lock again! BTW, my engine ran find with cracked heads after a bad overheat, for almost 3 seasons, then the Hgs blew at the end of the season, had water in one cyl (not...

OMC King Cobra conversion to merc

I wish I knew the screen name of the guy on here Rick who did something very similar himself, and it tuned out great. Might search around and see if I can find his posts. I think it will all fit fine, it may be necessary to drill a couple extra holes for the B-III but the cut out for sure is the...

    5.7 omc no thermostat

As long as the engine didn't overheat, and bits of the old one didn't get into the circulating pump should be OK. You have to use a proper Marine stat, 160* for the OMC and its held in with that rubber ring. An automotive stat will let the engine get way to hot and will rust out in no time...

    Mercruiser 5.7 2001 - choo-choo sound - what could it be?

Yep could be a loose spark plug, or perhaps a failed exhaust manifold gasket, as well. I hope you can remove that "well" that the engine sits in so the poor mechanic doesn't have to contort himself to get at it .

You should see water being exhausted like this.....right in front of the big anode on the lower unit....

89 4.3 OMC cobra stalling at WOT

Probably not but make sure that someone didn't put a 195* thermostat in there. The stat on these are held in with a rubber ring that can get obscured with rust, you have to dig it out with a pick. A good test on temps is to get an IR Temp gun. Then take a reading of the intake manifold right...

89 4.3 OMC cobra stalling at WOT

220 is waaay too hot! These have a 160* thermostat and an open cooling system they normally run at 160-175*F. Here’s mine in a couple pix You may have: Stuck thermostat Worn impeller Clogged up manifolds Clogged water outlets on the thermostat housing With the engine running on the water hose...

Oil in gas/water in cylinders 94 Volvo Penta 4.3

Sounds like you had 2 separate problems contributing to the overheat & hydro lock: impeller & thermostat not maintained Exhaust system not maintained As far as evaluating possible damage that is difficult. IMO you can take the cyl heads to a machine shop to have them checked for cracks and check...

89 4.3 OMC cobra stalling at WOT

An 89 might still have points ignition, have those been changed? The dwell angle is set first then timing then idle speed. This is a long shot but a defective tach can short out the ignition. You can try disconnecting the tach lead at the coil. Also about the burned exhaust hose, the 86-90...

OMC King Cobra conversion to merc

Yes it is and in fact there was a member here by the name of Rick who did a similar conversion on a Four Winns Liberator the originally had that same power package (Ford 460/Baby King Cobra). If your drive & transom assembly are in good shape they can be sold on eBay or whatever for pretty good...

    5.7 omc stalling while shifting

That’s used in the auto applications if you have the large water separating filter like I do you should have the screen filter there. We had a 1975 Olds Delta 88 350 with the Quadrajet and that’s the filter we used.

    5.7 omc stalling while shifting

well now you gotta go learn how breaker points igniton work. you set the gap when the dist. cam is on the high point, but then check with a dwell meter at idle speed. Gap & dwell are inversly related, small gap = large dwell angle. It is actually the degrees that the dist cam turns, when the...

    One manifold hot (5.0)

Get all your tools together If you don’t own a rechargeable 1/2 drive impact gun get one Start early don’t do it on a hot day Drink lots of water I’m lucky that I can remove the rear seats in about 5 min then take apart the wood support panels in 5 min it’s wide open. The benefits of older...

    5.7 omc stalling while shifting

Ok do you still have points ignition? If so & the points haven’t been replaced in a while a bad condenser can cause what you’re experiencing. This happened to me once before. I usually Change points when they get pitted or it starts running bad out of the blue.

    One manifold hot (5.0)

BTW I had this problem once when a cooling hose popped off the ps cooler on the back of the engine. Overheated the engine & filled the bilge with seawater up to the pulleys. When I pulled the boat both flappers were fried and those exhaust hoses looked OK on the outside but were burned up on the...
