    Mercruiser 260 Backfire Through Exhaust

Did you check the block and head surfaces for flatness could have warped either and be the source of leaking. Normally need to use a machinist straightedge and feeler gauge

Alpha one gen II growling noise when turning

that I do not know maybe @achris does . He may also have some ideas on your noise as I would expect a gimbal and u joint replacement to take care of it

    Identifying 1976 Engine-is it a 302 or a 351?

I think yours is a a dual plane - likely an Edlebrock Performer. That is not a marine carb. as outlined about would swap it for a Edlebrock 1409. Yes all stock marine cams are fairly sedate in terms of duration and overlap, but usually there was a 15-30 hp diff between 2 bbl and 4 bbl...

Alpha one gen II growling noise when turning

Check out this video gives an idea of what comes out this Chris is a moderator here and has excellent videos all worth watching Would think you can pop it out and feel for roughness. I assume yours has a drive lube monitor so it wouldn't run dry if input shaft seal leaks

    Mercury 3.0 EST no spark

if it is not moving around at idle it is locked in base mode. Module only in there. I would try as AD suggests pulling the plug off. Only thing I can think of is if you are getting 12 v to the base mode wire ... Assume balancer hasn't slipped such that you are not actually at TDC ... grabbing...

    Identifying 1976 Engine-is it a 302 or a 351?

yes the deck is taller on a 351 hence the wider intake bolt spacing Take a picture of the carb, thinking it is an old Carter AFB given the sticker and the fuel inlet location. I would verify it is a marine carb not an auto one... Not sure if the Old carter AFBs (that sticker predates carter...

Runs great on muffs but not in lake

Take the drive off and see if the shutter ,which should be at the the top of the exhaust pipe just below the down elbow, is blocking flow. If it isnt stuck in there or in drive (it went somewhere) you dont have an issue with exhaust restriction.

    Mercury 3.0 EST no spark

Were the modules from the same supplier? So you are able to get it in base mode and set initial timing, but the timing doesnt advance past 18 deg BTDC? I think you should be 24-26 or so total at 2800 or so rpm. Do you remove the jumper to put it in base mode? seems to be locked in base mode

Alpha one gen II growling noise when turning

I think he meant the input shaft bearing in drive, but could be bearings on vertical driveshaft. Would think the input yoke and bearing would have some side play if worn and be the only part to make noise when turning drive. I think you only need the tool to remove large ring nut off drive input...

Merc 5.7 Keeps Shearing starter bolts

Would suspect your bolts are loosening up or not correct, maybe you have a hydro lock going on? Would use a mirror to see if threads are busted, try loctiting them in. My friends boat had a loose starter couple years back, dealer had replaced starter under warranty just after he bought it. Bolts...

Mercruiser 5.7 carbureted wont start when warm

Scott has you steered straight. Buy or rent a fuel pressure tester plug it into the test fitting scott mentions. Alternatively you can disconnect the fuel line from carb and cobble together flare fittings with hose and a T to put it in line between pump and carb. Need 4-6 psi. you pretty much...

Mercruiser 5.7 carbureted wont start when warm

How about an engine serial number or picture of carb so we know what you are working on ? Fuel dripping of Venturi when you shut off is stuck needle and seat /float or too high fuel pressure. Can measure fuel pressure then put a carb kit in the carb. What carb did he use ? When this happens...
