    well it could be the upper oil seal but unlikley so just drop the GC you will see if it flows down from above (sludge) or exits UP from the lower sealed cavity of the GC

    that hole is a carb vent to let air in or out as the float allows fuel to enter and when the fuel gets sucked in the engine. if fuel comes out the float/inlet needle is not doing it's job

    drained oil sludge... unburnt fuel/oil carbon etc... also.... keep the small drain hole open with a pipe cleaner or piece of stiff wire so it can do it's job and let water out if you store outside in freezing temperatures !! Always drain and replace the GC oil before long term...

    are you experiencing carb issues or just doing maintenance..in case. you may be able to get way with just blasting the lower jet (do not remove it) behind the bolt at the bottom and..gently unscrewing the top needle and give a good shot of carb cleaner to purge the LS circuit...

    2 HP Mate Coil

    make certain you line up the coil edges with the mounting. fingernail should not snag...up or down . put one drop of 30 oil on the felt and if you are going to go to the trouble of changing the coil may as well change the plug wire which is probably as old as the coil !

    been boating 60 years never seen a broken drive shaft from shock or rust ..... but most will say I am no mechanic. I stay awake at knight thinking...how is the rest of that engine ?? :-)

    fundamentally what we have here looks like fuel starvation from poor pumping which you can accomplish manually . back to options.. pump pressure pulses from the crankcase poor or missing for some reason check rear gasket alignment fuel restriction which the pump can't handle ..change...

    metallic wire goes about $1-2 /foot ... recently sold for $37/100 feet on Amazon :) if the engine was issued with carbon core wire ask a dealer if low resitance metallic wires could do any damage...which I doubt but no harm in asking. in theory (ohms law) 5000 ohms/foot is noting compared...

    different story.... check the low speed circuit of the carb incl the drip holes under the dime size cap on top . carb has a small side channel leading to the top drip chamber ....clean it blow it ... check the LS needle for tip breaks your carb has no bottom needle just a fix jet behind...

    emi shielding often done with high resistance carbon fiber wires.... to stop noisy high feq. noise mostly in AM band radios metallic strand 7mm wire from your local lawnmower or motorbike shop should do as a test measure a good wire resistance if 0 ohms then it is not carbon fiber...

    heat often affects coils...or condensers . have you done any tests or replaced them... ?? the rest is wires, dirty points cracked plug wires . http://www.leeroysramblings.com/johnson_magneto.htm plug boots to engine should give a SOLID 4-8kohms approx. bubbles are odd it should suck...

    50/1 is the usual mix. some oils smoke more than others . stick with high quality stuff or synthetics. it may be running a bit rich... smoke is good...

    holes... are for venting out or breathing in... otherwise they are plugged ! just make certain they are clean and open ( no crud or varnish etc...)... if that jet does not meter fuel it meters air ....same procedure clean it blow it... don't worry about the design itself somebody did...

    older plastic tanks are solid ...try to find a Mercury brand fuel tank on craiglist or similar sites. similar to this one... I have 2 and they are plenty adequate plus they have an internal reserve section ...
