Mercury 1150 Stuck in UP position

Be very careful loosening or tightening those hydraulic hoses. The trim cylinders are inclined to strip out. You will have a hard time fixing that, if it happens. You will probably need to look for a used replacement. The PTT fluid is either dextron auto trans fluid which is clear red, or...

engine swapped now starts won't die

The harnesses are likely compatible, unless the older motor was from the 60's. It sounds like your ign killer wire is not connected correctly. On older controls (~pre-1978) it would be salmon or orange. On newer controls it would be black/yellow. On the motor is it likely black/yellow...

1986 90hp Merc pwr of twr lower unit disassembly

Don't you already have enough stuff apart to replace all seals? The driveshaft seal is in the waterpump base. The shift shaft seal goes in from above. You have the bearing carrier out, so you can replace the oring and propshaft seals. Why take it apart more?

You should repost this in the MerCruiser forum. Those guys are experts.

    Tritoon vs Deck boat

Gee, I would have thought the deckboat would be far superior in a chop! Was it some sort of barge?

Mercury 1150 Stuck in UP position

You are sure the manual tilt locks ( dog ears) are not jamming the trim bracket? The were connected when new, but usually rust out and separate. If that is not it, run the trim up a bit and then switch to down immediately.

    Mercontrol problem

Pull the cowling off and push the throttle all the way forward. See if the carb open. If not, you have a MerControl or cable issue. If the carbs open all the way, and thee motor doesn't rev up, you have an engine issue.

    Elgin 5HP motor

dwc is suggesting that your powerhead may be air cooled. If so, you will see cooling fins on it, like a lawnmower engine.

    Tritoon vs Deck boat

A 27 foot deck boat? The only concern would be the shallow water of Barnegat Bay. If you run aground, it will be hard to get a 27 footer free. As long as you stick to the channels in the main bay, and be real careful in the cross bay channels to Barnegat Inlet and Tices Shoal, you should be OK.

    Tritoon vs Deck boat

Barnegat Bay has 3 foot chop from the north, most afternoons in the summer. Try that in a 'toon!

    Tritoon vs Deck boat

'toons and Barnegat Bay are not good company. A deckboat has almost the room of a 'toon, but handles chop much better. I live on Barnegat bay, and I know the afternoon chop very well.

What brand of 2 stroke oil do you use for your Johnson Evinrude 2 stroke

I use J/E oil for my Merc OB. I like the pale purple fuel color when mixed at 50::1. The Merc has not objected as of yet. I used to use Pennsoil, cause I liked the pale green color. It looked like ocean water. I use Wallyworld TCW-III in my Johnny with oil injection. I like the bright...

Ability to use amenities with inverter

Stove needs to use some sort of fuel when no shore power. Most are dual fuel/electric. Coffee pot can be used to brew, and then shut off. Hair dryers use the most power of the small appliances. Phones, laptops use small amounts of power. Stereos vary in power consumption from little to...

    Prop shaft question

Gee, marine grease works real well, if you clean and reapply each season. Of course, if you are not going to clean and regrease, nothing will work. The same goes for the steering rod.

    Tight Steering

Clean and grease the steering rod on that Alpha. That is what usually gets hard to move. Those "hinges" are greasable.

    1996 Evinrude V6 150 (60 deg) Looper Problems

If the compression values are the same (within 15%) across the cylinders, the motor is good. A cough is usually a lean condition. Note: When I installed my carbs, after rebuild, I needed to slide them on the throttle body until the spagetti seal was seated in the groove.

    1996 Evinrude V6 150 (60 deg) Looper Problems

Susie, I have a '98 J150EXECD. That is a 60*V6 motor, and it idles real smooth. Anyone who says a rough idle is the nature of the beast, is ill informed. I think your compression numbers are fine, as they are even. I think you will find and correct the cause of the motor's issues. It could...

Wood species and type for stringers

Use dry pressure dimensional treated lumber. It is so much more rot resistant and lamination resistant than plywood and has good enough enough strength.

    1996 Evinrude V6 150 (60 deg) Looper Problems

Susie Q the motor you are working on represents the highest evolution of the 2 stroke, multi cylinder engine. It ran great and was reliable. The pollution controls doomed it. You will find the issue and fix it. I will chime in if I have anything of value.

Wonder if I should go IO again or go OB?

I had an '88 Alpha I 4.3LX. I liked it, but lots of stuff broke or wore out. 1 set manifolds and risers: several thermostats, circulating pump and belts: 1 set power steering hoses:2 alternators and starters: 1 set of bellows, u-joints and yoke seal plus the normal maintenance items found on...
