    1975 Johnson 115 starter motor

New OB Starters are often available from aftermarket sources like Sierra. They are about US$150, here in the states.

    Restoring salt pitted stainless steel

Stainless can get very small rust spots which are visible if you look close, but it doesn't corrode. At least any decent SS will not corrode. Chrome plated hardware is fine for freshwater, but pits and peels near salt water. Aluminum will get white powder (alum oxide) on it and some pitting...

    Antifouling outdrive

Spraying antifouling paint on an outdrive is not sufficient. You will have a barnacle-fest at the end of the season. Clean it, service it and install it. Now prep it for paint. Brush aluminum primer on it, making sure to cover all the bare spots. 2 coats if necessary. Now brush Trilux, 2...

    Saltwater eating my trailers...

Galvanized trailers are real good at resisting corrosion, if you flush them. Flush them interior and outside. Good ones will have drain holes. Buy some "cold galvanizing spray" and use it on all exterior rust spots or potential rust spots. I pulled the rear support off my 1989 trailer to see...

Searay 180 Alpha one fuel pick up fitting replacement

My '88 SeaRay had a bit of an unusual fitting there. The pickup had a tube that goes into the fuel tank, which is standard, but under the tube (which unscrewed), was a filter. The antisiphon valve was integral to the pickup tube. Most of the standard fuel pickups do not have the filter, and...

Measure the center of the transom down to the center of the hull. Most motors have multiple mounting holes. Advise us on which ones you are using.

Help, please. Do I have a chance in finding this part?

They are also about the most available part there is, since they need replacement all the time. Often you can find points that will fit from other motors. For example, Eska outboard motors often use lawnmower points, since the powerheads are often manufactured by a lawn mower maker. Good luck..

1987 Mercury 35 hp outboard carb fuel leaks

Gas leakage means the inlet needle or float is bad or not adjusted properly. Replace the float, inlet needle and seat plus all gaskets, after cleaning the carb completely. Make sure float is adjusted to factor spec. Carb kits should be widely available. Try crowleymarine or any Sierra Dealer.

Swapping Short and Long Shafts between outboards

Correct, however, I was providing general info about the two shaft length motors. Some Mercs had 5" extensions on the midsection, driveshaft, water tube, shift shaft and studs. They were easier to convert. On a related subject, would you rather swap a powerhead or a driveshaft? Powerhead...

    Over heating problem. need help

Cylinder head gasket leaks can cause overheating. A compression test might show it. Of course, it would overheat at high RPM also.

Swapping Short and Long Shafts between outboards

Normally the midsections will be different lengths, as will the shift shafts, water pipes and driveshafts. You might measure them. You should see about a 5" difference. You may be able to swap powerheads. Does that work?

    Over heating problem. need help

Water pressure should build as motor approaches 2000RPM, poppit should then open and water pressure will likely level off. If that is what you are seeing, then I am not sure what your issue is. However, If the water pressure drops at 3000RPM, then it sounds like something inherent to running...

Fresh Air Intake Vents & Glove Box Drain Tube

Do you have a powered blower on that boat? I would expect you should have one. Passive vents are fine, but to keep from exploding upon engine start up, you must run the blower for 5 minutes before starting.

    Engine Cover Rehab

Just use some web strap for the handles. use a a 2X2 along the rear of the cover to stiffen it. use 1/2 PT CDX plywood for the engine cover. use some fiberglass cloth to reinforce the seams, and you will not need any other cleats or blocks.

1999 Johnson 175 Ocean Pro problem

Are you using the oil injection system? If so, an air leak in the gasoline fuel line will cause lots of oil to be injected. Check the main strainer(you changed the fuel filter, right) under the airbox and its oring and rubber seal. My guess is that you did not replace the seals correctly.

    Control linkage retaining pieces

Mercs of that vintage (in general), had a metal casing which was one piece with the shift slide track, with 2 plastic tubes inside to hold the cable barrel nuts, a metal lock lever that swung to starboard to hold the barrels, and a plastic flip over lock, Go on the crowleymarine site and you...
