    Over heating problem. need help

Replace the poppit valve with the exact one from your motor. They have changed over the years.

You could clean your carbs...... Say $150 and an afternoon.

97 150 hp carb battery cables

Yes, smaller gauge wires are thicker. AWG originally referred to the number of times the wire was drawn thru the die to reduce it's diameter to the right size. Zero AWG wire is good for 150 amps. 4 AWG is only good for 85 amps. Starters can use 150 Amps, however, battery cables are...

97 150 hp carb battery cables

Gee, 6 ga is pretty thin for battery cables. 4 ga is for 100amps, which is marginal, for a starter. I would go at least 2 ga.

    Overweight motor

90HP is a lot of power for a 16 footer with a flat bottom. Most 16 foot v hulls are not rated for that power. I suspect you are way over powered for that design of the hull. Some boats have a max speed, based upon the hull style. Your hull should run dead flat in the water, since it is flat...

    Over heating problem. need help

So it overheats at 3000 RPM and not at 2000 RPM or 4000 RPM? Maybe the poppit valve is sticky, and the water pressure at 3000 RPM is not enough to open it? A guess....

    Quick Start

Quickstart uses white/black wire from temp sensor on head, directly to powerpack. The black/yellow and black/orange wires when grounded by the ign switch and shift assist switch, kill spark to the motor.

    Engine Re-power

Optimax is a direct injection 2 cycle engine, the same basic design as the FICHT you had. Optimax uses high pressure air and fuel to aid injection, versus FICHT, which uses only high pressure fuel to aid injection. I expect the Optimax will have similar performance, although greater power...

    Another winterization question

A lot of people do not understand the benefit of filling the block with antifreeze. They think it unnecessary.....well it is, if you are positive you got all the water out of the block. So, do you feel lucky?

    Fuel Problem

The gumout sprayed on the intake components indicate an air leak. I would check the bolts on the carbs (carefully) to make sure they are tight. You do not want to crack the carb bodies. If the air leak is small, it will have minimum impact on high speed operation. it will normally make the...

    Fuel Problem

Tony, your motor is 2 cycle, so each cylinders crankcase is designed to be isolated from all others. You would need to check pressure/vacuum on each cylinders crankcase. Gee, why not just clean your carbs?

    Overweight motor

Joe, See where the antiventilation plate falls in relation to the bottom of the hull. Perhaps the midsection of the motor is too long or too short. Also, see if the motor "hangs" straight down. Some hulls have angled transoms. See where the tilt pin is set. These control how much the motor...

    1973 Mercury 1150 Misfire on cylinder 3 and 6

If the waterpump base is melted, replace it also. Also, if you suspect a driveshaft seal leak, replace the pump base. Make sure to clean the driveshaft and lube, before replacing pump base, or new seal will be damaged.

    Another winterization question

Running the motor in a bucket of antifreeze is a really bad way to winterize it. When you do that you get some amount of antifreeze, into some part of the engine, at some strength. Very dangerous for the engine. My recommendation is to drain it completely and then fill each hose with some...

    Fuel Problem

Tony, Carb kits usually come with gaskets for the side plates on the throttle bodies. You can spray the idle passages and idle needle after removing the side plates, without removing the idle needle. So the carb synch is not disturbed. Carb kits will come with the "spaghetti" seals for the...

    1975 Mercury 650 starter issue

Mercs of that vintage have a battery cable for both positive and negative on the starter. Make sure both are clean and tight to get max voltage to the starter. Make sure the ground cables from the lower cowling to the engine midsection are clean and tight as well.

    Another winterization question

Most I/O Engines are either FWC (antifreeze) or RWC (raw water)cooled. A lot of FWC engines don't need any winterizing, as the engine block is full of A-F and the risers are self draining and raw water cooled. However it is important to determine what you have, and winterize the parts of the...
