    Your compression values should be around 140 PSI or higher.----I would remove cylinder head to investigate.---Sorry , perhaps you bought a " trouble motor "

    The id tag on the transom bracket is off a 1966 model 18 hp.----But most will agree that the powerhead is not a 1966 model.

    The serial # on the block is different than on the transom bracket.------The decals on the cowling make it a 76 in my opinion.

    That spring holds choke OPEN at full throttle.---Nothing to do with your issue at the moment.----Did you clean high speed jets.---They are screwed into bottom of float bowl.----Did you soak carburetors in a strong cleaner?

    Water pump impeller changed every 5 years ?

    You can clearly see that it was assembled in Canada.----And the 20 HP was marketed in Canada for a number of years.----The 25 HP were also marketed in Canada and elsewhere !----For a number of years Evinrude stuck to 18 HP decals.-----Johnson marketed them with 20 HP decals.

    Model numbers of the 2 motors ?----Are the 2 ignition systems the same on these 2 motors ?

    I see the disc in picture # 6----Is the serial # there the same as on the transom bracket?

    Well----The first part on that line is the model number.----Followed by the serial #----It is that simple to one who knows these motors.

    Clearly the model # tells me it is a 76 model.------The decals are also 76.-----And 20 HP models were only marketed in Canada for some years.----Your location ?

    You have inspected the clutch dog and forward gear lugs?----Made sure that shift rod connecter is assembled correctly ?----Made sure shift rod is adjusted correctly at the shift handle ?----You bought the new prop at a dealer or " on line " ?

    Also look at the condition of the bow eye and the backing of it.----Boat that I am still working on had it anchored in what used to piece a piece of wood.-----Now a solid piece of " non wood material " with 2 eyes.----One for winch strap and one dedicated for safety chain.

    Remember when you look at the package it might say rated for 1500 LBS.----But when that material ( Chinesium ?? ) is 5 years old and has been exposed to sunlight it might not be as strong.-----And yes the impact rating is most important of course.
