Mercury 150 Black Max ~1992 year model

The main jets and possibly the idle jets, are partially clogged. Remember no fuel means no oil.

Mercury 150 Black Max ~1992 year model

It is likely the carb throats for the low compression cylinders are clogged, and the damage was done while you were motoring around the lake. The compression may have been fine when you started, as the motor ran at high speed, for a while.

    Drain plug confused

I had a Crestliner of similar vintage. (1960?) I had the same setup. The plug in the rear seat is an air cavity for floatation. The front plug had a scoop on the underside of the hull for draining water from the boat, while underway. My boat had no other floatation than the air cavity. The...

Milky Gear Oil - Now What?

You can pressure test the gearcase with a handpump. Connect the screw in adaptor from the gear oil pump to the hand pump and give it a coupe of pumps. You can usually hear the air leak out. If she doesn't leak from the prop shaft, you will need to remove the gearcase and check the seals on...

    1992 merc 90 2 stroke

No, the oil injection is mechanical. Without the purple and brown wires the alert system won't work. You will therefore not know if the oil tank is low or the oil pump has failed, or the motor is overheating. She will still run, without the alert system. I would premix the gasoline at a...

    1978 Mercury 700 Control Box

ADI motors are wired quite differently than the distributor ignition illustrated. Go on the maxrules web site and find the correct wiring diagram for your motor, by year, if you can. If not, a 1977/78 Merc 850 will be pretty close. It has 4 cylinders and therefore 4 coils, but the stator...

    2007 Chaparral 270 Signature. Seats\Vinyl

There are places on the web that sell marine vinyl. They will provide samples so you can check for match or color and texture. I would search for wholesale marine vinyl or some permutation.

Purple is ign power to the lube alert sensor. The output from the lube alert module is to the same buzzer for overheat. Your current 6 wire harness doesn't allow for either of those wires.

Gee, what kind of motor do you have? MerCruiser I/O, IB or something else.

    Johnson Command Center

It is easy to bypass the neutral safety switch. Simply connect the two wires together. The motor will now start in gear, at any throttle setting. The danger is that it will start at full throttle and cause injury. Why not replace the control? ebay should have something.

    How bad is it?

What is the compression of all 3 cylinders? No cylinder head on that motor, just a water jacket cover over the spark plug holes into the cylinder. All pistons + crankshaft must be removed from the block for boring and honing. Pistons are $100+ each. Boring is likely about $75 each.

Also, The lube alert module for the oil injection likely needs the ign power (purple) wire.

    1992 merc 90 2 stroke

It is difficult to see what you have in the video. You should have red, black, black/yellow, yellow/black, grey and yellow/red as a minimum. Those are for +12VDC, ground, ign killer, choke, tach signal and starter solenoid, respectively. The voltage regulator would normally get the purple...

Mercury 85hp runs fine on Muffs but Boggs down in Sea

Glad it worked out. Unfortunately, current marine mechanics (and owners) are not well versed in adjusting the older carbs.

    1992 merc 90 2 stroke

It sounds OK. What were the wires that did not exist in the 6 wire harness? An 8 wire harness will have +12VDC, Ground, Kill, Choke, Starter Solenoid, Tach signal, Overheat and ign power.

Getting heavy scale off of the outdrive

Purple Stuff is the generic version of Castrol SuperClean. It is an alkaline cleaner and degreaser.

    Mercury 80HP Mounting on transom

As long as you have 2 bolts in the PTT brackets, you should be OK.

Any concern using a boat in saltwater that has always been in freshwater?

Actually, use zinc anode in saltwater. Outboards are designed to use in saltwater. Flush it with freshwater if you can. if not don't worry about it. Make sure to grease the steering rod a couple of times during the season.

Getting heavy scale off of the outdrive

On-Off cleaner is bad for metal. I think that is what you used from Starbrite. It has 3 acids and some alcohol, again bad for metal. Use some purple stuff and scrubby pads. If that doesn't get it, scrap, sand and prime and paint.

    Mercury 80HP Mounting on transom

Depending on the boat (high performance or not), the shim may be a good idea. On high performance boats, they can lessen drag, w/o inducing ventilation. No way to tell w/o a water test.
