Different way to set max timing?

Sounds like a good way to destroy your motor. Max spark advance can be set on land, just by cranking the motor with all but #1 spark plug removed, and the prop removed. Simply set throttle to max and crank motor in gear, by jumpering the starter solenoid. The timing pointer can be set...

Mercury 85hp runs fine on Muffs but Boggs down in Sea

Yes, 1-1/2 turns open is the initial setting. They will need 1/2 - 3/4 turn more, but must be adjusted individually, under load, fresh 50::1 fuel mixture, in the water. You might check the timing as well. Set the throttle such that the carbs are ready to open, but still closed. Crank the...

Going from 8" to 12" wheels -fender clearance?

I do not like the look of the front spring support. That is too close to the tire, and it is sharp, unlike the fender. If the fender rubs, it will wear but not puncture the tire. You can get new leaf springs pretty cheap. Get a pair of 23" springs, and new fenders or stretch/bend the...

    temp beeper mercury 115 1991

overheat alarm is one wire. It grounds when it detects overheat, and grounding completes circuit sounding buzzer. Not sure what beep is. Look on head for overheat sensor. Likely tan wire. Ground it with ign on and listen for buzzer. Most controls have buzzer built in. Some are mounted...

Mercury 85hp runs fine on Muffs but Boggs down in Sea

It is not the seawater. It is not the cooling system. it is likely the idle mixture is too lean. The PO had some work done and the mechanic (or PO) didn't know how the set the carbs. The part about running well on the lake was BS. Take her out on a calm day. Warm her up and try to...

    siphoning fuel from gas tank

The best way to siphon the fuel is to remove the fuel gauge sender and put a piece of 1/2" copper pipe in the end of the siphon hose. Now stick the pipe thru the garboard drain and into a jerry can, and start the siphon.

2011 engine keeps beeping that it’s overheating!

I could not find a 2011 115HP Merc, but the 2012 Merc 115 has a poppit on the side of the block. If would makes sense to inspect and repair it.

1973 Sea Ray 190 Fuel Tank Location

A marine fuel tank will have a fuel fill opening(1-1/2"), a vent opening (~5/8") and a fuel withdrawal fitting (~3/8"), or two. It usually has a fuel level sender, and some sort of label or tag telling that is is a marine fuel tank and it's capacity. If your tank doesn't match that...

    Thundercraft Inverter

Inverters usually convert 12VDC battery power to 115VAC power. Your shore power is likely 115VAC, and the battery charger converts it to 12VDC. I do not expect the inverter to be in that circuit.

Power trim -goes up fine; trim motor runs but doesn't go down

What kind of motor? What year? Older Mercs sometimes have the manual tilt lock jam. I presume you do not have that?

Replacing an old outboard on a 1964 MFG Niagara Custom

The changes needed to electrical and mechanical controls depend on what motor you plan to install. What kind of controls do you have now? 2 lever mechanical control box and ign key on the dashboard? I presume your steering is cable and drum? Newer OBs could be connected to the cable and drum...

1973 Sea Ray 190 Fuel Tank Location

I did not think you could still get a steel fuel tank. It would have likely been OEM for that boat. However, most tanks were aluminum on the 80's and plastic in the 90's and today. You might make sure the fuel tank is marine-rated.

1973 Sea Ray 190 Fuel Tank Location

Not sure about that exact model, however, most boats of that size had the fuel tank under the deck, just in front of the engine. See where the fuel fill is, as the tank is nearby.

    89’ OMC 4.3L Winterize Question

Gee, I bought 4 Gallons of automotive A-F and poured it in after draining the block and manifolds and left it over the winter. In the spring, I drained and saved it for the following winter.

    89’ OMC 4.3L Winterize Question

The best way is to pour the A-F into each of the hoses and watch for it to push the water out. You do not need to run the motor, with this method. I used to then reinstall the drain plugs and fill the block with straight A-F.

    Fast Strike 150 GLERV hoses

Not sure what year your motor is, but for my '98 Johnny 150EXECD, Page 2-52 (the last page of the fuel system has a diagram) of the recirculation system. The upper and lower bearings are connected to the vapor pump. The hose from the vapor pump directly connects to the lower main bearing...

Mercury 150 Black Max ~1992 year model

The RPM is not limited if the motor overheats. Usually those motors have a temp sender for a gauge on one head and an overheat sensor on the other head. The overheat sensor will ground when the motor overheats, sounding the alarm. I would turn the key on and jumper both to ground and see...

    07' Optimax 150 alarm issues

An owners manual or service manual will describe the different alarms to you. Mercury intended for you to have that info. I am not sure that premixing gasoline and oil on an Optimax is an option. You should check on that. Optimax's have a 7 port oil pump. One port for pumping oil to each...
