    need help with year identification

In the early days of Mariner the 40 and 50hp were 2 cylinders. Mariner and Mercury relabeled the 4 cylinder 50 to 45 the same year. The 44 cu in block was introduced in 1958 as a 40hp, in 61 it was also used for the 50hp and in 62, a 45 and a 50

Volvo Penta 4.3Gl (1998 carbuerated) running hot (or is it?!?!)

You are sure the Replacement is an actual Volvo 4.3? Perhaps the Motor that was finally found and installed, was an Auto/Truck engine, even still retaining an Auto/Truck Thermostat.

    Enough horsepower?

Myself, I would be putting a 150 on it. If you are worried about exceeding the HP rating, a Merc 135 V6 would be a great choice for that boat.

    need help with year identification

The 4 cylinder 50 was still a 50 in 1985, in the late 80s it became the classic 45. Nothing changed on the engine, except the Decal.

Some of the WD40 went out the Exhaust Ports and that is how it ended up in an exhaust housing drain, located on the Gearcase.

    1976 25hp Johnson ignition question

If the engine doesn't turn, how did you manage to gap both sets of Points? A bad Crankshaft Seal will not prevent the motor from rotating. It will allow Air in and oil-fuel out. What are the compression Numbers? Spray a bit of Premix in the carb and see if it starts

    1985 50HP 4-cylinder power loss

1 1/2 to 2 minutes of nonstop cranking will likely have done the Starter Motor in. I did on my dad's Evinrude, when the Key Switch failed and kept feeding power to the Solenoid. As I was unhooking the main Power cable, smoke started coming out of the starter. New Starter and Key Switch solved...

Low Compression in two cylinders and blowby

All engines have Blowby, even brand new ones. Yours is 24 yrs old, and unless you bought it new, you don't know it's History. You say it has a ton of Blowby at Startup. Is the Spark/Flame Arrestor covered in Oil? If it is pushing a bunch of smoke out the Exhaust at startup, that is not Blowby,

Low Compression in two cylinders and blowby

4 and 6 are next to each other, and since they both have low Numbers, a Bad Head Gasket is strong a possibility

    1962 Johnson 5.5 hp questions

Starter Fluid is not something you use on a 2 Stroke, unless it is a Diesel. The stuff is very a good Lubrication Remover.

1988 Mercury 2 stroke 15HP outboard fueling issue

Perhaps the Carb has some Gum/Varnish/Dirt in the Idle and Off-Idle Circuits. How through was your carb cleaning? How is the Spark, good enough to jump a 3/8 inch gap? Are the Plugs, and Wires good?

    Mercury 1150 115hp(1977 I believe)

Pre Thunderbolt? The Thunderbolt engine came out in 1949. Later on, Thunderbolt was a reference to the Ignition System. Being that the Control Cables are attached inside the Cowl, indicate that it is 1965 or newer, the upper cowl is pre 68

high voltage to just one battery but not the other (from alternator)

You can not use AGMs where the Charging System is Unregulated, which is the case for many Outboards. The reason being, often the battery will be overcharging and the Electrolyte boils off, in a Wet Cell, you can add Water, in an AGM, that is not an option. And if they were to ever be heavily...

OK to run outboard 1 cylinder not working ?

If the engine is not firing on all Cylinders, it is not producing all it power, which means the remaining Cylinders will be overloaded and will not attain the proper WOT RPM, which is usually a Death Knell for most engines
