    Low RPM at WOT

My 18 foot SeaRay 205HP 4.3LX would do about 42MPH at 4400RPM. It had a pretty good hull. I don't think a SBC V8 would have pushed it to 50MPH. Your speed may vary.....

Need help engine swap from Carb’d 135 to Optimax 150

Optimax's have several alarms. One of them is when the sensor detects water in the water separator. You might tell us the number of beeps or solid tone length.

Nightmare of a first time boat buying experience. Comments and advice appreciated!

Tows are expensive. How long was the tow in time? $4K for a tow should last several hours. That riser looks to have been in salt water, and as bad as it looks is likely original. Risers last 8-10 years in saltwater, and still work pretty well, but the passages are clogging at that time...

Merc 115 Tower of Power Won't start

If you want to check the timing, a timing light is necessary. I do agree that the would not normally change, but you have ruled out the other stuff...a motor needs spark, fuel and compression to run. You say you have those, so timing is logical to check. Maybe you inadvertently changed the...

Merc 115 Tower of Power Won't start

It is worth it to check the timing. Set the throttle to a point where the carbs are ready to open, but still closed. Remove prop. Turn ignition on and connect timing light to top spark plug wire. Jumper starter solenoid and read timing at decal. Timing should be 0-8* ATDC.

    Low RPM at WOT

50MPH with a 4.3L in a 20 footer is very unusual. Good luck with that.

Where can i get longer steering cable for Evinrude 35853R?

You should post this in the Johnson/evinrude forum, and say it is for trim/tilt. As it reads, it is for a steering cable. PTT cables are usually just 3 wires. What part of the wiring harness do you need an extension for?

    850 timing

As Racerone said, set top cylinder to TDC with a dial pointer or caliper. Now remove distributor pully cover and see where cast arrow points. Remove timing belt if necessary to make arrow point to TDC dot on flywheel decal. Now remove rest of spark plugs. install top spark plug into engine...

    Gauges

Some I/Os have a temp alarm sender as well as a temp gauge sender. temp alarm sender will short to ground when the motor overheats. Do you have the temp gauge wired to the correct sender?

Problem with Sierra riser 18–19 36

After you get the riser off, if the mounting surface of the casting is not rotted away, you can true it up on some plate glass with sandpaper on it. Ditto on the manifold as well, which should be trued up. Use the heavier OEM gaskets, as they work very well.

    Cavitation plate

Most planning boats will wander at low speed. The cure is to make small steering adjustments to average a straight path. It is the nature of the thing. The horizontal plate above the prop in an antiventilation plate. It is designed to keep air from being sucked into the prop. The best way...

    Fuel leaking when motor tilted.

It does sound like fuel delivery issue. Pump the primer bulb when at full speed. If she maintains top speed, that confirms fuel delivery issue. If moving the tank closer doesn't fix it, you may want to rebuild the fuel pump. They do not last forever. If primer bulb collapses, you have fuel...

    Johnson V4 swivel grease

I had the same issue on my Mercury. I was able to mitigate it (not fix it), by tilting the motor up. Now I tied a rope around the antiventilation plate and transom bracket and tightened it like a tourniquet. Turn the steering while tigntening the rope. This forced the motor up on the...

Outboard throttle lever loose (sideways movement)

Go onto the OEM web page for that control. A lot of them allow the throttle handle to be mounted on both sides of the control box, for dual engines. As such they can be removed and tightened.

    Fuel leaking when motor tilted.

When you say surges, do you mean that the motor runs up to full speed upon initial acceleration, and then slows a bit, an then runs back up to full speed?

    1974 mercury 115 in line 6

Check the distributor pully cover. They can get loose and rattle. A bit of blue locktight on that bolt and the flexplate bolts works wonders.

    Floor Joint Design?

You are going to cover the plywood with glass and resin right. That adds lots of strength, Are you installing foam under the deck? if not, why not? If you are using 1/2" plywood, foam and glass/resin, no joint reinforcement is necessary

Using Neoprene Strips to Cushion Marine Gas Tank

How about self stick weather stripping? Should work about the same and be much easier.

    Fuel leaking when motor tilted.

Most/all of my outboards leak fuel when tilted. Some more than others. My I6 even had a fuel catch basin under the carbs. Floats and inlet needles do not last forever. They are maintenance items. Perhaps yours's are worn out. Can you leave the motor tilted down, when fishing? That saves...
