Where do you like to prop your boat?

also depends on the load you typically have in the boat, light load 4900 is fine but with a full load going little higher may help.

Quadra Jet: cross threaded fuel intake fitting

The other thing is that unlike in an auto applicaiton, the in carb filter on the Quadrajet is really just a screen, you are supposed to have a water separting filter to do the actual filteration. So they don't have to be replaced every season like the water seperating filters. I only do them...

Can worn points cause this? Video included

The quickest way I found of setting dwell was to hook up a remote starter switch so I don't have to keep jumping back and forth front to back. it is a bit of a pain but if you can get decent quality points, no electronics to go bad the vid suggest more of a surging condition than a miss. make...

Quadra Jet: cross threaded fuel intake fitting

I've had 2 Quadrajets (on my family's '75 Olds Delta 88 back in the old days) and on the boat which I have owned nearly 20 years, if you are careful you will not strip this, just remember all it has to do is seal, that's all.

Should we antifoul paint our 1998 SX outdrives?

PS there is no way that normal aluminum antifouling will last a year in full time salt water storage, at least not in my experience, I get through season but here that's only 6 months at most. So if you want to keep this boat figure on 2 haul outs per year, one to do all the maintenance after...

Quadra Jet: cross threaded fuel intake fitting

And to prevent this in the future before bolting the carb to the manifold carefully thread the fuel line in by hand; especially with a rigid fuel line this prevents cross threading because the carb can move slightly to let the threads line up. Same thing when installing a new mechanical fuel...

Should we antifoul paint our 1998 SX outdrives?

Also, the bellows has a ridge that has to fit into a groove in the gimble housing mount for it to seal and the screw for the clamp has to be properly oriented so it doesn’t cut into the rubber when you turn all the way to one side. The bellows is assymetic meaning that it has more folds on one...

Should we antifoul paint our 1998 SX outdrives?

What you are up against is the difficulty of maintaining stern drives in salt water. The boat yard should be pulling the drives once a season to check the bellows for water intrusion and greasing the gimble bearings and ujoints as well as checking both for roughness and wear. For your next boat...

    89’ OMC 4.3L Winterize Question

When I do it I leave the AF in, that’s for corrosion protection because it keeps air out. Once you drain all the water out and fill with AF no need to drain the AF.

Should we antifoul paint our 1998 SX outdrives?

Volvo Penta 4.3 Gi Conversion to 4.3 GL

I was thinking it could be one or both of the diodes. Switching back to a carb you’ll have less trouble sourcing parts and if you get good at cleaning and rebuilding carbs you can be relatively independent of mechanics.

Should we antifoul paint our 1998 SX outdrives?

If you need to bottom paint your boat you absolutely need to paint your drives. I brush on 2 coats of Trilux out of the can and use the spray for where the brush can’t reach. I will usually get through the season with just a few barnacles and slime…. BTW the water intakes have crud in them you...

91 four winns 285 express cruiser question

not sure I never owned a Ford marine engine. I'd advise trying to find an OMC factory shop manual, they are out there on ebay.

91 four winns 285 express cruiser question

Well that might be the case. If you follow my posts on this forum I've complained quite a bit about what I feel is the poor and cost-saving design of I/Os....in that they should all come standard with: Closed cooling so you don't have to contort yourself to get the damn drain plugs out, and...

91 four winns 285 express cruiser question

I would pull the drive and at least check the driveshaft bellows for water, that’s the only “easy” cause the others are all more “interesting” Lol. Welcome to owning old I/os with lots a places to leak water

    Carb Recommendations for 5.7L Vortec?

The only Mercs that had Holleys I am aware of date back to the 70s when they were using Ford V8s. I know that in OMC/Volvo applications there was a bolt on bracket for the throttle assembly on the carb that makes the connection to the throttle cable. Then there is a bracket that is at the rear...

Opinion on types of starting batteries

I don't think there is any need for anything bigger than a gp 27 for a 4.3 V6. What I use are Deka Marine dual purpose batteries, they are better at tolerating drains than a starting battery is, and this can be advantageous if you leave your boat in the water like I do and there is a rain storm...
