Add alternator to 1987 Merc 60?

If the motor has a charging system, which is likely, it can charge both batteries. However, some of the charging systems are so weak, that charging a trolling motor battery would take 24 hours of the motor running, which is not practical. if you are running low current stuff like a...

    Smoke coming from starter solenoid

You obviously have a power wire touching a ground wire, likely the starter solenoid wire. You might repost this in the Mercury/force forum, as it is likely an engine wiring problem.

    Tilt trim solenoid

All solenoids need a ground. Sometimes it is the metal case of the solenoid, that needs to be grounded. Sometimes that have a dedicated grounding lug. Did you buy a marine solenoid? They are spark proof, which is a good idea.

    Trim O-rings

Some Merc Service manuals have the dimensions of the orings. You should be able to order them online. Of course if you need several different oring sizes, it probably makes sense to order a Merc or Sierra kit.

Stator question on 1976ish mercury 1150

Gee, I am not sure how a mechanic can tell the switchbox is on it's way out. They are one piece and potted with epoxy. If the epoxy melted out, that would be a sign, but other than that, he would need XRay eyes.

    1981 mariner tilt and trim.

Did the motor ever come with PTT? If so, you should be able to retrofit yours Go on the crowleymarine web page and try to find a Merc 40ELPT and see if it had the 2 brackets, 4 hoses, 2 cylinders and PTT pump in the boat-style PTT unit.

Stator question on 1976ish mercury 1150

The CDI electronics web page has a test for all parts (wiring, switchbox, coil), except the trigger. If she has spark while running the test, just the trigger is bad. Normally that is the case on those motors. Heck, my switchbox was under saltwater for 2 weeks, and it still worked.

Stator question on 1976ish mercury 1150

Forgot to answer your second question. The switchbox generates the spark. It contains capacitors that are charged by the battery, and a electrical trigger circuitry. When the distributor senses it is time to fire a spark plug, it sends a small electrical pulse to the switchbox. The...

Stator question on 1976ish mercury 1150

A 1976 Merc 1150 would have distributor ignition. The stator would serve to charge the battery only. The switchbox is powered by the battery. You can change the stator only, if it is bad. It does not directly affect spark. A lot of those motors have wiring harnesses that are falling apart...

    Tilt trim wiring

Solenoids can be energized by about 3A. The PTT wiring in the controller should be sized to handle that. So are we clear now? 3 wire PTT motors use solenoids. There is no reason to use relays. 3 wire motors have two windings with a center ground. The unused winding in a 3 wire motor is...

    Fuel thread sealant

I used this on leaky gaskets on my fuel tank. I would expect it to work on threaded connections. https://www.permatex.com/products/gasketing/gasket-sealants/permatex-permashield-fuel-resistant-gasket-dressing-flange-sealant/?locale=en_us

    Fuel thread sealant

Permatex II and III (aviation) are gasoline soluble. You do not want to use them for fuel fittings. Permatex does make a gasoline-resistant gasket dressing. I would suggest that. I found it at a local Autozone.

    sparking sound when idling

Do you mean carb intake, when you say air port? Not sure how water could get there. If the block is not cracked, water can only enter via the crank seals or via a leak or hole in the exhaust baffle, or inner exhaust cover. You should be able to see holes in the baffle or inner exhaust cover...

    Tilt trim wiring

3 wire trim motors usually use solenoids. They do not need relays, although, I think you could get them to work. However, I do not see the advantage of using relays on 3 wire PTT motors. Most newer PTT motors are 2 wire. Relays are required for these to operate. When you buy these for an...

    sparking sound when idling

Water in the bottom 2 cylinders is often due to bad crankshaft seals. These are easy to replace, once you pull the powerhead. As for the ignition wires. They need to be solid wire. The original wires were stranded stainless steel. I have heard of replacements being stranded copper. If you...

    Tilt trim wiring

Relays and solenoids are a bit different. Relays connect wires when energized and when not energized. That is ground is connected to the trim motor when the relay is not powered. When the relay is powered, it connects power to the trim motor. Relays use a 2 wire trim motor, where polarity...

    sparking sound when idling

Those old "Tiger Tail" spark plug wires can arc to ground. That seems like what you are hearing. They were avail for $6 or $7 each, but you had to install the spark plug spring connectors and boots. Pre built they were $20 each. Try one of those old merc web sites. You may get a link by...

    '95 Twin Johnson 175's

Air can leak into the gasoline line, even though gasoline doesn't leak out. I would look for an air leak at the main strainer under the airbox, followed by any filters and metal fittings on the gas line. The main strainer has an oring plus a gasket. make sure both seal. Another potential...

    '95 Twin Johnson 175's

Is the port engine smoking more than the stb? The OMS pump on those motors will mix more oil if there is an air leak in the gasoline line. Are all the port spark plugs the same color as the stb ones? If not the carbs may need attention.

    1984 Mercury Trim Question

The trim brackets should be bolted to the transom clamp, so the engine and trim cylinders can come off as a unit. However, that requires that you unbolt the hydraulic lines. You would need to bleed them upon reinstall. The threads where the hydraulic lines connect to the trim cylinders strip...
