    Removed flywheel

Gee that's easy. Put the flywheel on anyway, and turn it until the top cylinder is at top dead center. Now remove the flywheel bolts and turn the flywheel until the arrow on the distributor pully points at the dot (punch mark) on the flywheel face, on the edge of the timing decal.

    Upgrade Steering On 16ft Bayliner

Do you have an outboard or sterndrive? Is the cable greased? Outboard steering rods bind in the tilt tube. Sterndrives bind in the tube on the steering gear in the bilge. They can both be cleaned and regreased.

    Pulling Engines and Gantry Built

I built one very similar to what you have there. The only real difference was that I put a 2X4 flat on the ground, from upright to upright to keep them from spreading.

Should I remove the batteries from the boat when I charge them?

Leave them in the boat, battery switch off and trickle charge them every 2 months.

For those fishing enthusiasts - what's your style of boat?

Whalers always rode real hard, even in modest chop. My neighbor has a 27 Outrage. Nice when tied to the dock, but always pounds you while underway. A boat that size should make the bay and inlet smooth, but it is miserable. That would be a no to a BW and a no to the CC, at least for me...

    Epoxy question.

Polyester resin and cloth are fine for most repairs, like the ones you are doing. If you are patching a sizeable hole in the hull, I would grind the hole to feather the glass and then do a repair from both sides at the same time (if possible), using epoxy and the appropriate glass product...

For those fishing enthusiasts - what's your style of boat?

Center console boats are hugely popular here in NJ for both Bay and Ocean. I find them OK for real nice days, but wet and windy for any other days. If you go fishing early in the AM, even in the summer, the wind can be brisk, and you cannot get out of it. I prefer bowrider or Dual Console...

    Seeking marine gauge recommendations

The water pressure gauge can indicate the condition of the impeller. If pressure drops over time at the same RPM, it indicates the impeller is wearing out.

    Epoxy question.

All 2 part epoxy resin is waterproof. Water will only get in thru a defect in the coating. For items that flex, a layer of fiberglass cloth will help keep it waterproof. Epoxy needs protection from the sun. Most wood sealing can be done with polyester resin. It is fine for above waterline...

Installing trim gauge on old engine that has no gauge.

If you found the sender, trace the wire to the boat harness. The wire may be white/tan. Your gauge would use switched DC power and ground plus the sender wire. You might purchase a trim gauge for your brand of motor, as the sending units may be unique to motor brand.

    mercury 500 50hp ignition connection

When you say ignition wire, which one(s) do you mean. On an ADI ignition like you probably have, there are wires from the stator to the switchbox to charge it. There are wires from the trigger to the switchbox to fire it and there are wires from the switchbox to the coils, to fire the coils...

    mercury 500 50hp ignition connection

You might find an wiring diagram for that motor. iBoats has some on this site. Maxrules site also has some. Normally the ignition wire would be grounded to kill the spark, and ungrounded to allow the motor to run. What is the rest of the engine wiring harness look like? usually they are bad...

    Seeking marine gauge recommendations

Obviously the simplest approach is to try to get a speedo that matches your tacho. Barring that, find a gauge style and brand that you like that has both gauges. I have never found any real difference between the brands. You might consider a water pressure gauge for your outboard. Those are...

    Starter Issues on Mercury 115

A lot of those starters are permanent magnet ones. If they are connected backward, they will spin backward and the bendix cannot engage. You should be able to turn the bendix up to engage the flywheel, before powering the starter with the start position on the ign key. If the bendix then goes...

    1986 Mercury 75hp Mod.

The Achilles heel is the cooling system and the carb condition. Both cause overheat and cylinder damage. Do change the waterpump impeller, wearplate and two gaskets every 3 years. if you suck up sand, change it right away. Clean the carbs and rebuild with new gaskets, inlet needle and seat...

    Garmin power

Good starting batteries will not drop below 8.5VDC when cranking the motor. If the voltage at the Garmin is below 8.5, either the battery is bad or the wiring has resistance causing a voltage drop.

    Old mercury 350

What year motor? Most Mercs from the 70s, 80s and 90s, have cable connections on the port side. The shift cable connects to the shifter slide, and the throttle cable connects to the S shaped throttle arm.

    Blackmax 135 loss of speed

High speed jets in carbs should be fixed. The only carb adjustments are for idle quality. You can examine the spark plugs after a high speed run for color. They should all be the same. if one is real black from fouling or real clean fro water intrusion, that could be the issue. Checking...
