    Timing does not change unless the flywheel key sheared.----Post the results of a compression test.----You are running with fuel mixed at 50:1 in your tank ?-----Did you install a new water pump impeller when you bought this motor ??

    For marine applications it is foolish to try and save a few $$ on a carburetor.-----Any leaks to the bilge might mean you had a parachute on , instead of a lifejacket !!

    Many folks have removed that pivot pin when trying to change the oil !!----That is a mistake.----If you are taking everything apart there is no need to worry when taking the pin out.----Did I say these lower units are easy to work on ??

    It is a pivot pin for shifter.----Take it out in order to take the lower unit apart.----Have a gearcase like that on the shelf here.----And one that is all apart.----They are easy to work on in my opinion !

    Stop !!!-----The coils on this motor do not use 12 volts from the battery to make spark.-----And I am working on a 1974 model 40 hp for the grandson.----New pistons and rings / water pump impeller / carburetor kit etc etc.----You may have done damage to points and coils if you applied 12 volts...

    Yes , that nut holds the lower half on.---Along with a stud / nut at the front.-----You can pull that pivot pin if you are taking the whole unit apart.

    Mark the hub and prop.----Test run the boat.----Inspect marks to see if they have moved after a slipping ( ? ) event.

    The electric primer is a valve.----It is not a pump.----When you push the key in and crank the motor , does fuel come out the little hoses.---Yes or no ?

    I can not see , feel or hear your motor.----Up to you to post some information.---Post compression test values.----Does spark jump a gap of 3/8" ( 1 cm ) on a test device.-----Does manual fuel pump go hard when operating it ?

    Some folks use " clothes line " on them .----I looks the same but is NOT the same.----Use tiller cable from your local boat shop.-----They are ok for up to 40 HP or so.

    The universal magneto is under the flywheel.-----It is a wonderfully simple set up.---Reliable / easy to repair.----Coils are cheaper than they were 50 years ago.----Some will argue.----There is no need to improve that unit.----It was installed from 1950 to 1990 models !

    Your location ?----What do you mean " there is no parts for these " ?----You would have to change that exhaust housing.----So what would your budget be to raise the transom or shorten the motor ?
