    4.3 Mercruiser cold start issues

I think that's a thing of the past Chris, if that were still an issue in the USA, you KNOW that Holley would have a pack of lawyers after them. Probably 80% of classic muscle cars and hot rods here are running Holley carbs, or their derivatives like Quick Fuel et al. Yet you never really hear...

    4.3 Mercruiser cold start issues

Interesting, I heard good things pretty much always about the Edelbrock carb but didn't really know this characteristic of it. Older Quadrajets had leaks from a welsh plug in the bottom of the bowl but I have not had that with mine. I also tried a Holley 4160 on mine for a while and that didn't...

    Pulling outdrive question????!!!

The bellows on this design, is actually at the top of the tube where the shift cable comes out in the engine compartment, it doesn't need to be replaced, until you replace the shift cable. Totally different design than the Merc Alpha shift cable bellows.

That's what makes it! easy engine access.

    Momentary freezing inboard

Definitely drain it. The risk of cracking something is just not worth it.

    4.3 Mercruiser cold start issues

And that's the advantage of a mechanical fuel pump, the engine stalls, pump stops, if the pump diaphragm leaks, the gas goes into the yellow overflow hose. Too bad modern GM small blocks did away with mount for the mechanical pump. And the pump will not fail to run if there is a wiring issue...

    Pulling outdrive question????!!!

Well if the flange on the gimble housing is in good shape with no corrosion you probably don't need it, but on older boats used in salt water it might be helpful. Bruce I see you sold the Volvo and went with Mercruiser, how do they compare? Cobalt is a beautiful boat. For me though no more...

    98 4.3L Vortec problem

Yep could be a cracked block/heads or if it has the Merc V6 one piece manifolds, they can fail and put water in a cyl and in the oil. Was the boat stored in freezing temps? Winterized properly?

    Pulling outdrive question????!!!

Yep they changed from the original style some years back so follow what they say.

    Pulling outdrive question????!!!

well you will hear different stories on that. I know in my OMC manual (for the pure OMC model) they did say to use OMC Gasket sealer on the flange of the gimble housing. So that's what I did. But some have said that Volvo says no sealer necessary. I coat the part of the bearing carrier that...

    Pulling outdrive question????!!!

joint venture is what you have other way you could tell is if the raw water impeller is mounted on the engine, if it is then its a joint venture drive. The pure OMC Cobras had the impeller in the tail end of the upper gear housing, both the dog clutch ones the rare cone clutch one. no gasket...

    2004 volvo penta 5.0 gl-e camshaft

that's a lot of pitting, did the engine sit with water in the oil at some point? I had 2 blown head gaskets, water in the oil (salt water) and was able to get the water out of it within a week changing oil 3-4 times. When I did the top end overhaul, I pulled out all the roller lifters to...

    Pulling outdrive question????!!!

Yep just think of the joint venture drives (hump on top of upper gear housing, not flat like a pure OMC Cobra) as the same as a Volvo SX. The similarities are really just in the transom mount, the drives themselves are totally different.

    Back again

True for old boats the I/O still makes sense even more so if you grew up around Chevrolet small blocks and know how to rebuild carbs, set timing, etc. Then, they were simpler than a carbed outboard that had a carb for each cylinder (so a V6 outboard had 6 carbs to worry about).

    Missing seal / gasket??

No gasket needed its just like a volvo penta sx. You shouldn't add one either, Just coat the part of the bearing carrier that presses into the bellows and the lip of the bellows that mates up with it. In fact I'd coat the surface of the upper gear housing that mates to the pivot housing with...

Glue vs clip VP SX exhaust bellows

pulling a VP SX is very similar to pulling any other, you need to know if it should be in neutral or in gear and I recommend the use of a drive jack and an alignment tool. I would just install the exhaust bellows with the snap ring instead of what was suggested. If you're going to own this boat...

350 mag, gauges dead, all other electronics seem fine.

Check the ignition fuse; if ok then move on to the ignition switch. B terminal (red wire) should have battery voltage any time your battery switch is on and when you turn the switch to ignition on the I terminal (purple wire) should have battery voltage. If this checks out then go back and check...

Replacing Trim sender with after market

Well I can't say for sure on a V/P drive but on my OMC Cobra drive I replace the OE trim sending unit (because the originals were NLA) with a Sierra one in 2010 and it still works! The OE ones never lasted that long.

    Missing seal / gasket??

This depends on which drive you have. A 1986-1993 OMC Cobra should have a gasket there, whereas the 1994 and up joint venture with Volvo Cobras do not, just the same as a Volvo SX. So if you have up to and including a '93, yes there should be a gasket, but if its a 94 and up no gasket. Looks...
