really think this thru though... cat converter exhaust, if you are in brackish or salt water... Merc V engines, 4500 in parts Volvo V engines 6000 in parts then there's: more difficult to winterize difficult access for some repairs, do you realize what a horror show some I/O installations make...

That sounds wrong but maybe the Vortecs can tolerate more advance than the pre Vortec due to the difference in the shape of the combustion chamber.

VIDEO Help: Post Texas Freeze Leak

By the vid it could be just the manifold or the engine as well but seeing as how both were full of raw water it sounds like you will need a new or reman long block + exhaust system and anything else that could have froze...power steering cooler, raw water pump, plastic water nipple in the pivot...

    1986 Galaxy OMC Outdrive Gears

Here's a (salt water used) Cobra...what does yours look like? As noted a 1986 boat could have either because some came with 1985 drivetrains some came with 1986s.

I think for that price you can do better. If its an I/O and it has cat converter exhaust stay away from it. Exhaust replacements on those will break the bank. I'd never buy one for myself. Get a late model boat decent quality with a modern 4 stroke outboard. Look at Key West Dual Console models...

    Fired up today...

Hope you get it up & going well after all the time you spent on the conversion last year. Looking back in my OMC shop manual for some reason the 4.3 was set up with a good bit less spark advance than the V8s. Not sure if this is peculiar to the pre Vortec engines with full dished pistons or...

    Mercruiser exhaust systems.

Yes great explanation Chris and definitely one of Mercury’s better ideas. In fact when I did my top end overhaul 4 years ago I considered changing to the Merc dry joint. I had the OMC one piece units (NLA years back) and I knew the newer 2 piece style used by OMC & Volvo would fit. The angles of...

    4.3 Mercruiser cold start issues

The Quadrajet is an excellent carb if you can start with an unmodified core. Even though they have not been made in 30 years you can still get most parts

Need help with parts list- converting TBi to old school carb

Ok find the purple wire connection on the ignition switch (terminals will have a red wire which is battery voltage, purple which gets voltage when when you turn the ignition to ON, and the yellow/red wire which gets voltage when you turn the switch to start). Then follow that wire in the harness...

    4.3 Mercruiser cold start issues

I’m wondering if these carbs have a welch plug or similar in the bottom of the bowl that could leak. This was a known problem with older Rochester Quadrajet carbs although I haven’t had this with mine. Even if it sits for the 6 month winter storage if I crank it over 3 times it starts. During...

Is the choke valve closing or mostly closing on a cold engine?

Advantages (differences) in I/O and inboard

In that environment shaft drives will have much better resale value. The much lower cost of maintenance vs stern drives will offset the higher fuel consumption.

Need help with parts list- converting TBi to old school carb

Layout 1 (marinepowerusa.com) page 17, you don't need the shift assist/interrupt stuff because Volvo doesn't use that AFAIK purple and grey wire are the ones you would need to figure out how to hook up. Look at the wiring diagram, find those in the engine wiring harness. take a look at this...

Need help with parts list- converting TBi to old school carb

And back to the fuel pump, maybe look up the specs for the OEM Volvo low pressure pump, it may already be at the right pressure for the job. Once you switch over to a carb and learn how to rebuild them and realize that Holley, Edelbrock and yes even Quadrajet parts are easy to find, you will be...

Exhaust crossover restrictor plate 4.3 OMC cobra.

When I took my 1988 apart, the restrictor plates were actually part of the intake gaskets and I installed the new Fel Pro gaskets with the supplied restrictor plates. It limits the amount of hot exhaust gas passing through the bottom of the intake manifold, just enough to make the choke open but...
