Mercruiser 5.0 TKS vs 4.3 MPI

I think you are on the luckier side with both the boat and the car. My 3.0 was in a 1991 I cleaned the carb twice. One of those times It made a big difference in runability/idle/ off idle throttle response, but I rebuilt it due to Black fouled plugs Only to find the choke sticking past...

    Gear Oil in UJoint Bellows

That’s in really good shape for a 1974. merc had I think 14 drives prior to the R/MR/ alpha one I think So hard to tell but ther is a lot of interchangeability from the mc1 thru alpha gen 1 (1990) I think you will need to remove the cap to make sure the shims etc go in corrct when reinstalling...

    Gear Oil in UJoint Bellows

Yes I think better together. But I think you want to make a similar fixture to attach it to the workbench or something less spindly than the portable workbench. try some heat on the outside of the housing where the nut goes in . These can be difficult to remove on older drives. Worst case drill...

Mercruiser 5.0 TKS vs 4.3 MPI

Absolutely I just gave that for engine comparison. 3.0 was in a 17 ft the 5.0was in a 21 ft. But to your point the 3.0 will only use enough fuel to make 135 hp not the 260 that the 5.0 makes, so It’s really about how much hp you are making and using at a given throttle position ... again fuel...

Mercruiser 5.0 TKS vs 4.3 MPI

You won’t notice much difference. At the same hp out put they will use pretty much the same amount of fuel. 1. if you are concerned about fuel economy pick a different hobby. 2. fuel economy is determined by how hard you hit the throttle. there are a couple gph fuel consumption calculators on...

    Sea Ray 195 vs 205

How many people Do you want to take out? If it’s 4 or less the 195 will be fine I have a 2004 sea ray 200 sport which I think was rebagged in 2006 and 2007 as the 205 sport, before they tweaked the swim pad and rear end. ive had this boat 5 years and absolutely love it. the size is perfect...

Mercruiser 5.0 TKS vs 4.3 MPI

I have a sea ray 200 sport with a 5.0 carbed. So that boat will do great with a 5.0 TKS. This is my second sea ray and both have held up really well. I personally prefer the carb as I do all my own work and while I know I will have a few (2) carb rebuilds over the 15 years I plan to keep this...

Slow Trim Up on 3.0 Mercruiser Alpha 1 Gen 2?

I used a turkey baster to suck the reservoir empty, refilled it with fresh fluid, ran the drive up and down three or four times, and repeated whole process several times until I had flushed it completely. I found a gallon of the equivalent hydraulic oil at the auto parts store for like $15. I...

Engine removal with boat in the water

The difference between Mercury labeled parts and Quicksilver labelled parts Is where they are sold. Merc labels parts/ lubes are sold through their dealer network, where quicksilver is Allowed to be sold outside their dealer network. Often the part numbers are the same with the exception of a Q...

Where to pick up power for electric choke?

The purple wire to the ignition is where mercruiser picks up power to the electric chokes. i think the adapter is factory. you can plug your serial number in on some parts sites and the parts breakdown drawings show an adapter between the manifold and carb that look like spread bore adapters. I...

    Tuliped valve causes

Yeah better off being a tad under propped vs over propped, especially if you tow. if you yank the heads and have tuliped valves would think it’s wise to replace them all especially on a SBC Where parts are relatively cheap

How tight is too tight when trying to spin motor by hand

You should be able to turn a 3.0 easily by hand with the plugs out pull the drive try to turn again this will separate any issues with drive or gimbal bearing that is keeping engine from turning easily if with drive And plugs removed you still can’t turn it easily and smoothly Pull the engine...

Engine removal with boat in the water

    Run 5.7 Gi-C on stand

Like AD said 6 is the 12 v + supply put a maintained jumper 6 to 5 to power the ignition circuit , put a momentary jumper 6 to 7 to bump the starter. I took two 5-6” pieces of stranded 14 gauge wire, twisted two ends together stuffed those into 6 , stuffed one loose end in 5, just touch the...

    Building a '93 Caravelle 1750 Classic Bowrider

Yes only use prior to start up and theoretically at low speed. You’ll find factory vents will blow air into engine compartment when moving, exhaust will suck off the bottom where vapors heavier than air will accumulate. This is not not only for fuel vapors but engine compartment cooling as well.

    383 cheap fun build ideas

Are you in salt water and if so d9 you have closed cooling? Might not be worth putting money into a raw salt water cooled block over ten years old. what killed the original engine and what did you replace it with ? stick reman?

980 hours on engines - compression test

My advice might not be as much fun but ... leave them alone . If you’re only getting 25-40 hrs a year ( I do the same in upstate NY) They will probably be fine when u do go to upgrade. Whats your oil pressure at hot idle and WOT? Certainly whoever you sell your boat to will be getting a very...

    Carb Rebuild Kit

No I had to SWAG it as the brass one does Not have the mark on the side that u use for float level. I think the Brass float is from an older Rochester 2 bbl that was the forerunner of the Mercarb. You maybe able to find a float level off one of those instruction kits. they may be on Mikes website.
