Your location ??-----See you dealer.----Adapter kits were offered at the time.----Or visit places like ----evinrudeparts.ca-----To see the parts needed.-----You might be able to make some of this stuff.
Bought a 15 HP motor with hole in the block..------Parts I thought.------But a metal plug had come out of the crankshaft.------Popped the hole in the block.------Machined a new plug and installed.-----Used " lumiweld " to repair hole in the block.-----This was about 15 years ago and motor is...
Sorry----This stuff in the water is normal.-----YOU need to install a new impeller.----Reason is that this motor does NOT have a " warning " system for overheat.----And the motor does NOT have a " shutdown " system in case of overheat.-----Motor will run until it is too late !
How about a compression test ???----How about the battery charging system ( broken belt ) as needed for electric shift ?----Evaluation electric shift components ??-----There might be a reason this motor sat for years.------ Ignition tune-up and carburetor cleaning might be a waste if this is a "...
Likely find parts on E-bay.----Just another reason why I dislike high tech motors.-----Great when they run.----Nobody wants to fix , maintain and support this stuff.
What are the compression numbers ?-----I think a 17" pitch prop will do the trick if motor is in good condition.-----What numbers do you see on your prop now.-----Post them here.
Just put magplate on 1959 model 5..5 HP Evinrude today.-----New coils , wires, points and condensers.--Set points by eye to 0.020" ------Nice spark on both leads.-----Sorry,---it really is not that difficult.-----Will use the meter for final settings in spring.

Points are timed to open relative to the rotation / position of magnets rotating around the coils.----After all this unit is called a " magneto " and it is a very good unit produced / installed for nearly 40 years.------The battery is not used to make spark.-----If points open at the wrong time...
Agreed the 28 / 33 / 40 HP had a DRIVE PIN and a cap that just slid on with a cotter pin to hold it..----BUT, most of the 18 HP motors had a threaded cap.
The topic for this thread is ----setting points and timing.-----So there are 2 concepts here.-----The breaker points OPEN to fire the plugs via the coils.-----The breaker points can be set using timing marks for strongest sparks.-----Or simply set the breaker points at widest gap of 0.020 " and...
