    You say you just bought this 37 year old motor.------Step # 1 is to determine why it might be bogging.-----You can do the mythical " sink and link " all day long and it won't help a motor in poor condition !!----Post you compression values , they should be 135 PSI or more to be called GOOD.

    If your funds are limited for a new boat like that ( $30,000 + ) then you have the opportunity to make this project so that the grand kids will enjoy it.-----New boats may have the same shoddy materials hidden by fancy carpeting.--------Look into composite materials for this project.

    Use a 7/8" wrench to remove that bolt.----Or remove cotter pin and pin on linkage .----Your choice and both easy.

    The thermostat normally fails in the open position.------Missing because folks simply do not know how important that part is.-----And a very common thermostat that was used for many years from about 1960 to 1998 in some motors.

    Perhaps your local machine shop can machine away the corroded material for say 1/2 " ( 12 mm ) and then shrink on an aluminum ring.----I would do that if I was stuck for a block to use.----Have a bunch here but you are too far away , across oceans.

    The timing simply does not go out of adjustment.----Well ,----- except for a sheared flywheel key !

    Some smart phones can be adapted to perform a tachometer function.----Just stick some reflective tape on the flywheel I think.

    ??----Them 4 valves are called ---check valves ----in the parts book.-----I always thought a check valve flowed one way only.

    Another KIJIJI special in Ontario.----If Electric shift it be a 1971 ( most likely ) or 72 model.---Post pictures of lower unit.-----Or post pictures of shift linkages on side of block.----Or control box. -----Is there a big yellow plug on the wiring harness ?

    Boats like that must be , and are often scrapped.----Or they must be repaired properly.-----If a hull like that fails in Canada ( ice cold water ) with the boat sinking the event might be in the newspaper.-----It sadly won't be on the sports pages.-----

    The decals clearly indicate a 1978 model.-----There were issues with upper and lower ball bearings.----Not quite hefty enough.

    Hopefully they use stainless bolts on those big multi engine center consoles.-----See them on those ---haulover inlet videos.-----You would not want those $35,000 motors to fall off.-----Not all STAINLESS is the same.

    Heat ( boiling water ) will expand the hole in the piston.----Putting pin in the fridge will shrink it a wee bit.------Might slide together.
